How to Turn Around a Losing Soccer Team

Below is a letter I received from a football coach who was losing and wanted to know how to improve his team.

Hi SoccerHelp,

We have had mixed success since my original letter. In the next football match we played, we won 3-0. I moved player 3 back to hitter for half the game and used player 9 at hitter in the second half. The guys played great and I thought I had finally cracked the code of having different guys play.

But the next week we lost again. We were scheduled to play a team that we could either match or beat based on our play last week. We lost 5:1. My boys played with absolutely no energy and it was extremely frustrating for me to watch them spin in place as they watched the other team run between them. At least half, if not more, of the team played as spectators. Most soccer goals were scored because my defenders were out of soccer position and not attacking the ball.

We lost 8-0 last weekend. I started playing with my stronger players in the opening quarters to try and keep the score and morale up. We played at number one and started quite evenly with it, but we couldn’t convert anything in front of goal because our offensive players were not in position and we conceded three goals in the first half. because our football defenders were out of position. Again we had a lot of stare downs on the pitch and after a while the defenders I had who weren’t playing very aggressively at first stopped playing completely. I had to take one player out because he actually stopped moving, it was like watching the Bad News Bears play football. Towards the end, even my good players gave up.

Apparently I’m not very efficient in my football training. What are some things I can do to help guys play their positions? We deal with this regularly in football practice, but it doesn’t seem to sink in? And what do you think about the game for children? I have enough good players to field a pretty good team, but usually half the team is on the less experienced side at one point. I try to give everyone almost equal time, but when the kids aren’t trying, I think I should take them out (I didn’t because it would mean some players would be sitting pretty much all the time).

Coach T

Hi Coach T,

I want to encourage you not to get too discouraged by your loss to the number one team. It’s very important to be realistic – remember that you should have lost to this team. What happened was that your team saw that they could not win and gave up in the second half. It’s not pretty, but it’s understandable and practical (Why keep killing yourself if you can’t win? It just saps your energy. I think it’s better to just admit it’s not your day and mentally focus on the next game Save your best effort for teams you have a chance to beat). I suggest you tell your team that they are getting better, but that the opponent was just better that day and losing that game is nothing to be ashamed of. It is very important that you are realistic about your team and its potential. You are not a miracle worker and you cannot do the impossible. All you can do is do the best you can with the talent, speed, aggression and training time you have. You HAVE to lose to a better and faster team – all you can do is minimize the damage and try not to let your team’s morale and confidence suffer too much.

I have some ideas for you to consider:

1. Scrimming at practice? If you do, stop scratching. kids play with more enthusiasm in their real matches if they don’t fight at practice.

2. I noticed you use iron-on patches with your team. Your biggest needs are aggressive play, defense and scoring, so I would only patch those 3 things. I would give a patch for NOT ONLY actually scoring, but BEING IN POSITION to score – if your players are doing the right things, they will start scoring. Once they learn to score goals, you may want to stop giving goal patches, but for now you have to teach them to score. Your team must also develop a DESIRE TO WIN. If you get more patches, buy V and A patches… when you win, make a big deal out of it. Don’t give patches for participation – give them for effort, success and aggression. An exception may be a patch for attending practice, but you can give it for every 2 or 3 attended practice. Attendance at practice is critical to your team’s success.

3. To stay motivated, try Motivational Quotes on Premium… I read them myself.

4. Do you play the practice game Dribble Around Cone & Pass Relay Race? Use it to teach aggressive receiving – this is important – your players need to be more aggressive in getting the ball. Play it with pairs and give the winners a patch. You will get better and faster results by focusing on Aggressive Receiving than by focusing on Passing – Aggressive Receiving is more important to teach.

5. Do you play Dribble Across and Square at every practice? This is important — play it at the beginning of practice as a warm-up — twice with a square 10 steps wide and then twice with a square 14 steps wide.

6. Don’t try to emphasize passing yet, except for the Dribble Around Cone & Pass Relay Race – tell your shooters to try to score and teach them to look for rebounds and be aggressive. Tell the defenders to kick it hard straight forward and teach the forwards to win the ball and if they do, give them a patch.

7. Do you have sports drinks and water at the games? If not, give it a try – it might make a difference (there’s a good article on hydration on Premium)

8. Play the shoulder game and power on the ball game to strengthen your players.

9. About equal playing time: Most leagues require each player to play 50% of the game – check what your league requires. If a player doesn’t try, rush, or do what you ask, they shouldn’t expect to play as much as someone who does – I think that’s a fair approach. You have a duty to the players but also to the team.

10. Have you taught Coaching Rule #3? It is worth 2 goals per game in U-9

11. Did you teach the first defender/second defender? How to teach them is on Quick Team Improvement.

12. I suggest you make a BIG DEAL BRAVERY and put a red patch for it and ONLY that — BRAVERY patch (also called Blood Patch) — trust me it works — I’ve used it myself.

13. You are right – you MUST have brave players at full back and stopper – this is CRITICAL. If you’re defending Deep, they don’t have to be skilled or fast, but they MUST be brave.

14. If you Defend Deep (if you leave your defenders deep) think about letting your hard defenders play most of the game or even the whole game (maybe alternating 3 players in these 2 positions).

15. Try the Win the 50/50 Ball Game and use it to teach players to slow down the offense if they can’t get the ball.

I think you’re closer than you think. The key is to motivate players to play hard. Don’t judge your progress by losing 8-0 – that loss is understandable – it was like an avalanche, once it started, there was no stopping it – best to try not to get hurt by it.
