Top 5 Vision Therapy Exercises
Vision therapy recommends more than 200 different eye exercises, and they often apply them using simple aids: glasses with different colored lenses, eye bands, bull’s-eye targets and beaded strings. The following are simple vision therapy exercises that anyone can do at home.
1. Call The Ball
Write letters or numbers of different sizes on a softball, kickball or soccer ball. Hang it from the ceiling on a string and push it in any direction. As it swings, call out the letters or numbers you see. The Optometric Extension Program Foundation sells dozens of visual exercise items, from simple cards aimed at children in day care to sophisticated computer systems for behavioral optometrists who specialize in athletic hand-eye coordination. If you want to delve deeper into vision improvement, contact OEP for a catalog or referral to a behavioral optometrist near you.
2. Follow your thumb
Several times a day, hold your thumbs at arm’s length and move it in slow circles, crosses, X’s, and in and out motions. Without moving your head, follow her with your eyes. Keep it – and the rest of the room – in focus as much as possible.
3. Palming
This helps to relax tired eyes. Rub your hands together briskly for 15 seconds until they warm up. Close your eyes and place your warm hands on them. Make sure your palms are cupped enough so they don’t touch your eyelids. The fingers should overlap and rest on the forehead. Breathe deeply and regularly in this position for several minutes.
4. Bead AND string
String three colored beads along a string or yarn about six feet long. Attach one end to the wall at eye level and hold the other end at the tip of the nose. Move one bead close to the wall, another about four feet from your nose, and the third about a foot away from you. Look at the farthest bead. You should see two strings forming a V with a bead at its tip. Next, focus on the middle bead. You should see two strings forming an X with a bead at its cross point. Then look at the nearest bead. You should also see an X. If your eyes are working as a team as they should, you will always see the two strings cross when you focus on the bead. If not, you can only see one string, indicating that your brain is suppressing information from your weaker eye. If you see only one string, consult a behavioral optometrist.
5. Do not look
If you’re doing close work—reading, sewing, wiring, or working on a computer—tape the front of the newspaper to a wall about eight feet away. Take a short break from your work every ten minutes or so to look over it, scanning the large type heading, smaller sub-headings and fine print. This helps maintain your ability to focus and minimizes the blurry vision that many sharp focus workers experience at the end of the day.
