Our National Team Takes Third in the World!
It would be a huge positive headline for almost any country in the world. It would be a very popular item. In this country, the home of basketball, that’s a humble statement. We are to beat the rest of the world with our great athletes and coaching. Professional basketball players are the greatest athletes in the world. The men are probably 6’8″ and 240 pounds. They can run like the wind, jump tall buildings in one jump, etc., etc. – you know the litany. But can they shoot? Can they defend the Pick & Roller?
I saw a few games and saw what I always see in a shooting arena. The players on the team are doing what the coaches taught them since they were kids…flipping their wrists, shooting at the top of a jump shot, maybe even reaching into the cookie jar. They also settle, especially at the free throw line.
Of those techniques, the biggest problem is probably the flipping of the wrist. Have you noticed LeBron James trying to shoot outside and flipping his wrist and sometimes “short-handed?” He was trying to figure out how much of his amazing muscles to use. He can do it at times, but it’s hard to do consistently, and he hasn’t been shot much this series. In particular, tipping the ball from 3-point land is a huge guess. And of course, when you start missing it, your mind goes crazy and makes it worse.
THE PUSH ACTION IS MORE RELIABLE
From my own experience and my research, I feel that the push motion with a relaxed wrist and hand is the most predictable and reliable. If it’s done at the same speed every time, then it becomes repeatable and then you’re just changing the arc to control the distance. As I’ve said over and over again, this is how Chris Mullin, Jeff Hornacek and Steve Kerr shot. A few great shooters do/have done it. Diana Taurasi, my vote for the best shooter in WNBA history, shoots this way now. If you see the slow motion of her shooting, you’ll see her hand bounce in the Follow Through, which means the wrist is loose. If it was tight, the hand would be stiff and clenched, it wouldn’t bounce.
Carmelo Anthony was the top scorer for Team USA. He saved the game against Italy. If he hadn’t scored 29 points in the second half, we would have lost that game as well. But he couldn’t save us against Greece. It also rotates the wrist. But probably not as much as LeBron, and his high level of concentration and confidence make him one of the few “good, sometimes great” shooters.
It’s pretty inept to shoot 10-for-40 three-pointers like they did against Germany. And 9 for 28 vs. Greece in loss. It’s the same, wrist flipping release motions. And this is from the international 3-point range, ~20′ 3 1/2″. That’s over 3 feet closer than the NBA 3-point arc, 23′ 9″.
15 FOR 30 FREE THROWS … NO SHAQ!
And free throws! How can players who have played as much basketball with as much athletic talent as they do shoot 15 for 30 like they did against Argentina? How about 20 for 34 against Greece, missing 14 free throws and losing by six points? And Shaq and Ben aren’t even on the team!
In my opinion this is due to the wrist being thrown. The muscles in the wrist, hand and fingers are small muscles called ‘fast twitch’ muscles. They are not as reliable under pressure. The consistent push-and-flop movement that I teach would serve all of these guys well, whether it was a jump shot or a free throw.
I’m not talking about the soaring, pinnacle jumps, fading anyway, the kind of shot these guys can pull off – sometimes. You have to use your wrist and hand for these shots because there is little, if any, power left for the shot. And it takes super-athletes like Kobe Bryant or Tracy McGrady to pull off that shot consistently (and they’re still prone to periods of poor performance because it’s so difficult). I’m more referring to the open outside jumper or the shot and free throw that we mortals need to perfect.
We need another way to practice shooting! My Swish Method is here to help all these great players shoot better. It won’t help with the Pick & Roll defense. I’ll leave that up to other coaches, but shooting, that’s a subject I know.
