Movie The Devil Made Me Do It: The Conjuring-3 Has All The Scares, But A Weaker Storyline!

The third installment of the much-celebrated “The Conjuring” series and the eighth film in the Conjuring Universe horror series – The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It – was set for a September 2020 release, but the COVID-19 pandemic delayed it. that until June 2021, when it was released simultaneously in the US and on HBO Max. Unfortunately, it could not be re-released in Indian theaters due to the pandemic. As the HBO Max release date was very short, Indian fans of the series were wondering where to watch the film given how excited and engaged they were with the haunted house stories The Conjuring (2013) and The Conjuring-2. (2016) featuring the adored real-life paranormal investigator couple Ed Warren and Lorraine Warren, brilliantly portrayed by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga in all the films of the trilogy and one of the Conjuring Universe franchise films. Finally. Amazon Prime Video has started streaming this movie from 15th December 2021 and the horror ‘entertainment’ has taken off again in India.

As usual, the story of this film is based on a true court case from 1981, where the accused murderer, Arne Johnson, pleaded not guilty on the pretext that “the Devil made him do it” because he claimed to be possessed by demons. in the commission of an act; this type of defense is a first in US litigation history. Ed and Lorraine Warren testified for Arn because they were convinced of demonic possession and provided all their evidence in the form of pictures and dash cam videos they took. However, since such an assumption could never have a legal basis, the accused was convicted and sentenced to 15-20 years in prison; but he got out of prison in five years thanks to his exemplary behavior and the fact that he married his girlfriend while still in prison. A dry trial can never be a suitable subject for a thriller-horror film, so a suspenseful story and screenplay was built around the case.

The film opens with the scariest scene of the film and possibly one of the scariest scenes in the history of horror cinema. The scene depicts the exorcism of a small boy, perhaps around 10 years old, named David Glatzel, in the presence of Ed and Lorraine’s stricken family and the exorcist. The chaotically terrifying developments that follow are better watched than explained, leading to Ed being injured and having a heart attack, while Arne Johnson’s character (played by Ruairi O’Connor), a friend of David’s older sister Debbie Glatzel (played by Sarah Catherine ), looks into the eyes of a violent David and invites the demon to leave David and possess him, which incredibly happens. This is a new twist for my horror movie experience as it raises some questions: the role of exorcists seems somewhat dubious and a demon or ghost is supposed to possess someone for a purpose, so why should it abandon its prized victim! Anyway, it was necessary as a prologue for Arne Johnson to go on the killing spree and face trial.

Compared to the previous absolutely immersive and tension-filled two films of the trilogy, the third lacks a narrative flow that is hampered by flashbacks, choppy cuts, and scenes that are half-edited, jump to other scenes, and then return to the former. This can be interpreted as a stylistic treatment of the director, but it does not help the narrative with regard to the continued involvement of the audience. For example, Ed Warren, who suffered a heart attack, probably rested for about a month (not clearly stated), during which the demon in Arn preferred not to do anything terrible. As Ed recovers with a telepathic dream, he communicates with Lorraine to warn the police of an impending tragedy at the home of Arne’s employer and landlord. And inevitably, Arne, in a sudden fit of possessiveness, murders the landlord and is arrested by the police.

Now comes the real turning point in the story: Lorraine, with her super-intuitive and psychic powers, visualizes the grim connection of Arne’s act with the murder and suicide of two young girls in recent days. Police have yet to find the body of a second girl who allegedly killed her boyfriend in a fit of the same type of demonic possession and then committed suicide. So, for the first time in the history of the trilogy, the police become involved in the investigation with the paranormal help of Ed and Lorraine, and eventually find the submerged body of the other girl, as Lorraine leads them with a dramatically created and bright shadow. a scene worth watching.

With the “connection” confirmed, Lorraine and Ed revisit David’s house, and Lorraine discovers a witch’s totem in the house’s rat-infested underground chambers. The angle of occult practices enters here, again for the first time, and Lorraine, convinced that the connection works both ways and is in the process of completing a curse implying more murders, begins to search for the source of the evil – if it was an evil spirit or a diabolical human being with supernatural powers, it must be avoid here to avoid becoming a spoiler. While the first half of the film is very engaging and full of suspense, the second half becomes rather predictable. Unfortunately, the climax fails to shock the audience.

But the film is worth watching thanks to the intense performances, as usual, from Wilson and Farmiga, as well as the jump scares that come when you don’t expect them and don’t come when you expect them to keep the audience guessing, especially the terrifyingly beautiful scene of David jumping on the bubbling mattress as if it were filled with water, and then something unexpected happened to him. The sequel, different from the other two mentioned above, reminds us of the great South Korean horror-mystery-thriller The Wailing, which we wrote about recently.

‘The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It’ is not directed by James Wan, who created the Conjuring Universe horror series with his Atomic Monster Productions and Warner Bros Entertainment’s New Line Cinema, capping a 20-year effort led by Tony DeRosa-Grund. and his team to make a series of films based on the supernatural case files of Ed and Lorraine Warren and direct the first film of the franchise ‘The Conjuring’ in 2013. The huge commercial success of the first venture led to the production of supernatural horror sequels and prequels one after the other: Annabelle in 2014, The Conjuring-2 in 2016, Annabelle Creation in 2017, The Nun in 2018, The Curse of La Llorona in 2019, Annabelle Comes Home in 2019 and The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It in 2021; the latter is directed by Michael Chaves, who made his directorial debut with the franchise film ‘The Curse of La Llorona’. The Conjuring Universe became the second highest-grossing horror franchise in Hollywood history and one of the most critically acclaimed. Almost all eight films were huge commercial hits worldwide with positive to mixed reviews. The franchise is currently working on two more horror films – the first is called ‘The Crooked Man’ and the title of the second film, which is said to be a sequel to ‘The Nun’, is to be announced.
