To Some, Half a Story Is Better Than the Whole Truth
If you want to realize true happiness, you must be willing to accept the world you live in and your role in the events of your life. Interestingly, humans have an uncanny ability to rewrite history to better fit their own personal frame of reference. Some have the ability to rationalize events in a particular event sequence and reconstitute those events to an outcome that best fits their personal reference to what was perceived to have happened or what the individual (innately) wanted to happen.
This approach is diametrically opposed to Article I of the Constitution of the intention. A liar often promotes a false story of historic proportions to protect an idea, belief, or reputation that individual has created for themselves. In another violation of the article, sharing only half the facts of a story does not fulfill the personal goal of honest existence and promotes a false assumption of character and behavior. A violation of Article I is a direct violation of fostering public and personal trust. The liar gets around this article by simply omitting parts of the narrative or history to support the lie. As a direct result of the liar’s omission, the story now seems to have meaning and value. Simple. Easy. Professionally processed. Now, the story is no longer a lie; that is, from a liar’s point of view.
Regardless of the omission of facts, it is still a lie. Half a story does not support validity. It only works to support the lie by burying the actual events of other details under a mountain of carefully selected reasonable and believable facts. Never underestimate that the remaining facts may also be perceptions of reality, thus adding to the gravity of the lie by distorting the facts surrounding the event and repackaging those “facts” as a lie. Never underestimate a liar’s goals. Consider this perspective another mind-buster: what if (subconsciously) the liar was working to support or achieve a self-defeating outcome? What if this person not only left out facts that support the counterarguments, but also reinvented the history of the remaining facts to undermine and destroy the intended outcome as a whole? Sounds unbelievable, I know. Unfortunately, you will find that some individuals just like to “watch the world burn”. Deep in the sick psyche of someone who wants to be the epicenter of attention, the liar tries to destroy the world around him. This person’s subconscious is deviant, working to disrupt or destroy good things so that others may not experience happiness; misery often enjoys company.
A liar never owns their own bad behavior or takes personal responsibility. Therefore, it is in this very character flaw that he must leave out certain parts of the story and rework the circumstances in order to blame and/or attribute greater wrongdoing to another party or parties, thus appeasing the liar’s bad behavior or wrongdoing and giving that wrongdoing meaning, purpose and validity. Again, this is a direct violation of honest behavior between people.
In these cases, one who is unwilling or unable to accept his own personal faults or role in an action, or would prefer to believe his own half of the story to settle this cognitive dissonance, is surely living in a false and contrived reality of the imagination. This conduct is also charged as a violation of Article VIII – Existence Rooted in Humility. It is always honorable to own your behavior and be corrected.
To better understand that a liar does not present all sides of an argument, we need to define and discuss dissonance for a moment.
Cognitive dissonance is the feeling of uncomfortable tension that comes from holding two opposing thoughts in the mind at the same time. These discomforts come from having to deal with the happenings of reality and how it conflicts with our own personal perception of events when such events contradict our beliefs, values, ethics, or our own ability to recognize our own personal injustices.
Dissonance increases with:
• The importance of the subject for us
• How strongly dissonant ideas conflict with each other
• Our inability to rationalize and explain conflict
Dissonance is often powerful when we believe something about ourselves and then do something against that belief. Discomfort often feels like a tension between two opposing thoughts. To release the tension, we can take one of three actions:
• Change our behavior
• Justify your behavior by changing conflicting cognitions
• Justify your behavior by adding new knowledge
Dissonance is strongest when it concerns our personal self-image, how we see ourselves in the world and how others see us. Having worked in the fitness industry for over 20 years, I can sense feelings of insecurity and poor self-image in people’s statements, suggestive actions and behaviors. I can often identify these feelings in people through casual conversation. Such discussions outline changing habits and behaviors that promote feelings of good health and well-being. Simply denying someone’s belief systems about fitness, exercise, and diet can be interpreted as a personal attack. In most cases of people I meet, and just below the surface in the places where the person is afraid to go, one can identify those who are victims of their own dissonance. People who are easily shaken and personally uncomfortable about their feelings and moral compass for decision-making often identify with this dissonance but do not discuss it or such conflict resolutions readily.
Dissonance increases with the importance and impact of the decision, along with the difficulty of reversing it. The discomfort of making the wrong choice to take your side in an argument is clearly greater than choosing your pants that day. Thus, when a decision gives way to a myriad of internalized personal conflicts, the likelihood of one’s dissonance increases exponentially and directly out of proportion to rational reasoning, emotional stability, and the ability to reason reality versus fantasy.
Some people see events NOT as they happened, but rather as they believe they happened. This belief is so tightly bound to one’s personal perception and reinforced by one’s own dissonance that any fact or point of view that contradicts this perspective is simply defeated as untruth, lie, exaggeration or manipulation of the events of circumstances. A person would rather believe their own story than allow another story to overwrite the first.
Therefore, for some, half the story is better than the whole truth:
• A liar’s inability to recognize his own personal faults makes the person feel better about his transgressions against others.
• They simply accept the liar and the reputation the liar has created. Believing stories that invalidate the liar’s arguments exposes the follower’s personal weaknesses and can lead to conflict with the liar. Therefore, a follower who does not aim to argue or promote the truth must also live with his own character flaws to accept shameful behavior.
• The listener / follower of the liar falsely believes that he is absolved of sin for supporting the liar’s half-truths in the name of “loyalty”.
If you want to be truly happy:
• You must be willing to listen to all the facts surrounding a series of events. You will have to find the strength to listen to things you would rather not hear or believe about this person you may call “friend” and accept the entire library of facts surrounding the event or circumstance. The truth is liberating.
• Emotional feelings cloud our judgment and prevent us from allowing all details to be evaluated and weighed equally. Leave your emotions at the door so that you can better evaluate each fact and come to the conclusion of what is happening and not what you would like it to be.
• If you are trying to live in a world that is truly untethered from the disabled, you must eradicate negative and undermining people who have illogical, immoral, unethical or selfish tendencies from your life. To be truly happy, you must allow the whole story to be told and not judge any of the accused until you have collected the entire library of facts.
• Embrace all the positives and all the negatives of the story to be told. Your mind knows the difference, even if you don’t want to admit it.
• Accept what is true and don’t analyze the thoughts in the story to help you sleep better at night. What is… is. The sooner you accept what is true, the sooner your brain resigns itself to accepting what is sometimes unbelievable.
