From Deadly Cancer to Unparalled Triumph, the Story of Lance Armstrong

With his recent unprecedented seventh Tour de France victory, Lance Armstrong is perhaps the greatest cyclist of all time.

Lance Edward Gunderson was born on September 18, 1971 in Plano Texas to Linda Gayle Mooneyham and Eddie Charles Gunderson. Eddie disappeared when Lance was two, and Linda remarried to Terry Keith Armstrong, whose surname Lance took. Lance did not get along well with his stepfather as he had not looked like him for several years, and he also expressed no desire to meet his biological father.

Lance was very athletic from a very early age, having started running and swimming seriously at the age of ten. At the age of thirteen, he started competing in amateur triathlons for adults. He became a professional triathlete at sixteen, winning the national sprint and triathlon championships the next year and becoming the number one ranked 19-and-under triathlete.

Cycling career

Lance soon decided to focus on his favorite and best event, cycling, and in 1990 he became the US National Amateur Champion. He qualified for the US Olympic cycling team the next year and finished fourteenth overall at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona.

The next year, Lance turned pro, joining the Motorola team and finishing the year ranked number one in the world. His achievements that year included winning the eighth stage of his first Tour de France, becoming the youngest man to win the World Road Race Championship and the first man to win the “Triple Crown”; Thrift Drug Classic, Kmart West Virginia Classic and CoreStates USPRO National Championship. However, his first Tour de France was a disappointment; despite his eighth win, he soon fell behind and eventually retired from the race.

Cancer and recovery

In 1995, Lance took his first victory at the Tour de Pont, a race in which he had previously competed twice. 1996 began as another successful year for him, in which he repeated his Tour de Pont victory, this time setting several race records, and again qualified for the US Olympic team despite recovering from bronchitis.

However, on October 2, 1996, Armstrong was diagnosed with stage three non-seminomatous testicular cancer, which, thanks to its late diagnosis, had already spread to his abdomen, lungs, lymph nodes and later even his brain. Hoping to save his career, Lance opted for more dangerous chemotherapy and underwent surgery to remove one of his testicles and brain tumors. He was given about a 50% chance of survival. However, his doctor later told him that the actual chance was closer to %3 and that Lance was given a higher rate to help keep his spirits up. He was declared cancer-free in February 1997 and founded the Lance Armstrong Foundation for Cancer Patients. in 1998 he returned and finished fourth in the World Road Racing Championship. In the same year, he married Kristin Richard, whom he met through his foundation.

Tour de France Victory and Divorce

Armstrong took part in the Tour de France for the first time in several years and took his first victory in the race, winning four of the twenty-one stages. He did it again in 2000, this time beating two of his main rivals who were absent from the previous race, Jan Ullrich and Marco Pantani, with Ullrich taking second place. He also suffered systemic shock in a car accident that year, but recovered in time for the 2000 Sydney Olympics, where he won a bronze medal.

In 2001 and 2002, Ullrich again finished second to Armstrong in the Tour de France. He won again in 2003, but that year was filled with divorce from Kristin Armstrong, who cited difficulties with his cancer care and extensive travel. However, Lance continued his winning streak, claiming wins in 2004 and 2005, bringing his total to seven before retiring for good. He currently holds the record for most wins by any individual.

Current

Armstrong currently dedicates his time to his charitable foundation, while still competing in various cycling and running events. From 2003 to 2006, he dated singer and songwriter Sheryl Crow. Lance currently resides in a home in Austin, Texas, where he also owns a ranch.
