I’m A Celebrity BET Me Out Of Here
This year another desperate collection of lost, never been and soap opera outcasts have been thrown into the Australian jungle to raise money for ‘charidee’, although we know it’s to put their faces back on the box and save a nice Christmas bonus in the process . “I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here,” now in its fifth incarnation, is one of the funniest reality shows ever, and it’s car crash TV in the best sense.
Where else can you see a moderately recognizable media personality covered in molasses and green ants, eating cockroaches and other “jungle delicacies” or thrown into a water tank surrounded by crocodiles and eels in an attempt to save a failing career?
While the show’s viewers squirm as “that bird that used to be on TV” munches on another specially fattened caterpillar to try and win food for hungry comrades limited to rice and bean rations, there are plenty of betting opportunities, too. fanatics in their seats.
Here we take a look at the runners and riders and how they fared after their first few days in the jungle.
Best Price: 3/1 (Sports Odds)
He has played “Rickaaay Butcher” in Eastenders since 1989 but has spent the last few years running his restaurant in France. He’s been out of the media spotlight since his singing career didn’t take off and admitted he was “bored” and jumped at the chance to appear on the show. Ricky, sorry Sid, was immediately instilled as the bookie’s favorite to win as he appears to have the ‘all in’ quality that saw Phil Tufnell romped to victory in series two.
Best Price: 7/2 (Sports Odds)
Another former soap “star”, Sheree’s character, Emmerdale’s “Tricia Stokes”, was killed almost three years ago when a pub chimney fell on her head during an uncharacteristically violent storm, on Christmas Day of all days, as rotten luck would have it. Since then, she has been raising her young children and living a life of luxury thanks to footballer husband Harry Kewell’s £65,000 a week salary.
Her arrival in the jungle wasn’t the best and comparisons to I’m A Celeb legend Natalie Appleton emerged when she didn’t feel like jumping from a plane to camp. At least she wasn’t afraid of trees. However, she redeemed herself brilliantly by getting five stars during the live jungle task despite being scared and remains one of the favorites to win.
Best Price: 11/2 (Tote Sport)
“Little” Jimmy Osmond became the youngest person to have a number one single in the 1970s with the annoying “Long Haired Lover From Liverpool”. He’s since become a successful real estate mogul, but he’s still spreading his brand of music to the general public. It’s hard to call him. While he seems nice enough and undoubtedly has a huge fan base, I find him a bit, well, odd. Recent tabloid polls rate him as the favorite to win, so the 11/2 price may shorten as the show progresses.
Best Price: 6/1 (Tote Sport)
Daughter of former Prime Minister Margaret and “famous” in her own right as a writer and broadcaster. Undoubtedly a “chip off the old block”, Carol has taken part in two Jungle Trials so far and tackled them with gusto. First she went go-karting across the ravine on a rope bridge and a few days later she sat down to dinner with Jilly Goolden to enjoy a meal of groats, cockroaches, fish eyes and finally kangaroo testicles.
You get the impression that Carol isn’t phased by anything during her time in the jungle, and the producers will have to come up with something pretty nasty to put her off. She will have power in this competition, but she may not have enough fans to carry her to victory.
TOMMY CANNON & BOBBY BALL
Best prices 18/1 and 15/2 (both Bet365)
One day you’ve got a hit TV show with millions of viewers and your own comic in ‘Look In’ magazine and the next you’re the face of ‘Safestyle Windows’ and gigs at Crown Hill Community Center and stuff. The aging comedy duo of Cannon and Ball were called to camp on day five and asked themselves, “What’s the point?”
Latecomers never do well on reality TV because they are subconsciously seen as “outsiders” and a threat to the established group. Upon his arrival, Ball wasted no time in “entertaining” the other campers with his catchphrase “Rock on, Tommy” and it seems inevitable that they would complete the task together with “hilarious consequences”. However, the prizes for them to win individually? Surely you can’t have one without the other?
Best Price: 10/1 (Sports Odds)
A permanently tanned “Bargain Hunt” antique expert best known for his “Cheap as Chips” and “Bobby Dazzler” catchphrases. Like Cannon & Ball, it seems a bit of an odd choice to go to the jungle, but his stay may be short in any case. He wasn’t too pleased to see the new arrivals while the other campers accepted their arrival and he may be the first celebrity to be voted off.
Best price: 22/1 (Bet365)
Jenny became the third member of Atomic Kitten to try her hand at reality TV, following the success of Kerry Katona, who won the show in series three and the role of Liz McLarnon on ‘Celebrity Love Island’ over the summer. She was paid more than any other camper to appear on the show, with a £100,000 fee reported in the press, which is sure to cause some friction. Although she seems pleasant and nice enough to look at, she hasn’t had a chance to do anything to convince herself that she can become the second Kitten to rule as “Queen of the Jungle”.
Best Price: 25/1 (Tote Sport)
He used to be in the boy band “Blue”, but unlike his three former bandmates, he doesn’t have a solo record deal – yet. He looked odd during his band days and didn’t really cut it as a teenage “heartthrob”. His swarthy and perpetually unshaven appearance made him better suited to running a kebab shop than appearing on stage and hanging on bedroom walls in the form of posters. Another one that looks nice enough but doesn’t have enough about it to stand out from the crowd.
Best Price: 50/1 (Tote Sport)
Jilly rose to fame presenting ‘Food & Drink’ on BBC2 for nearly two decades, becoming the UK’s most respected wine expert. But she wouldn’t come across anything like the gobblers and kangaroos she shot down while on a joint mission with Carol Thatcher. Her performance in this task will earn her respect and odds of 50/1 may be worth the interest and she may be released at a lower price as the competition progresses.
Best price: 50/1 (Bet365)
Former “Neighbours” eye candy and ironically the first Australian to appear on the show. Good-looking women never do well on the show, and although the perennially fresh beauty gave her best to the task on day two, she may be voted off sooner rather than later.
The three bookies’ favorites probably have the strongest arguments to win the show. Sid Owen has been one of the most recognizable faces on TV for the last 15 years, while if it was just voting power alone, Jimmy Osmond and his hordes of crazed fans would have won it comfortably for him. However, I’m inclined to back Sheree Murphy to become only the second Queen of the Jungle. He has a vulnerable quality about him that people warm to while stubbornly refusing to be pulled out of assignments even though it’s clear he’s not enjoying a second of them. The next appearance, such as her appearance in a live task, will make her fall at 7/2.
