Vampires in the Media

The theme of Vampires seems to be everywhere in the media today, from books and movies to commercials; you name it. It was recently found that since the beginning of the first quarter of 2009, one in seven books purchased was a vampire book. It’s amazing how dependent our society’s interests are on movies and literature.

Although vampire stories have been around for countless centuries, they have never been as popular as they are today, although descriptions and views of what vampires are have been greatly dramatized and changed over the years. What used to be a demonic and evil, blood-sucking creature of the night has now become a being primarily of romance and mysterious supernatural powers.

Interest in the subject has increased dramatically this year alone due to the overwhelming response to one of the best vampire movies ever made; Twilight by Stephanie Meyer. Stephanie first published the first book of the Twilight saga, Twilight, in 2005 and has since become one of the most promising new authors with the release of this amazing series. Personally, I’ve read the entire series so far and have been absolutely amazed at Stephanie’s ability to engage her audience the way she did with her approach to one of the most romantic and enigmatic creatures of all time; vampire. If you haven’t had a chance to read the Twilight saga, I highly recommend picking up a copy at your local bookstore if you’re at all interested in Vampires, because you won’t be disappointed with the world Stephanie has created for her. readers.

The Twilight novel became a worldwide box office hit in late 2008 when it was made into a Hollywood film directed by Catherine Hardwicke and produced by Summit Entertainment. The film stars Robert Pattinson as Edward Cullen and Kristen Stuart as Bella Swan and grossed over $382 billion at the box office alone, and that’s not even including DVD sales.

The sequel to the saga, “New Moon” is slated to hit theaters on November 20th, 2009. I personally expect the sequel to be even bigger than the HUGE response the first “Twilight” movie released. with New Moon currently filming. Fortunately for Twilight fans, the current cast is signed on for all the films in the Twilight film series. The third film based on the Eclipse novel in the series is scheduled for a June 2010 release date; not too long after the release of the sequel New Moon. The fourth and final film in the book series so far, Breaking Dawn, is not expected to be released until sometime in 2013, but I will keep everyone updated as new information is released.

Along with vampire authors like Stephanie Meyer’s, there is an author who captivated her audience in much the same way with “The Vampire Chronicles”, which began publication in 1976 and continued with the publication of the series, which ended with the last book in the series, “Blood Canticle” in in 2003. Anne Rice is one of a handful of talented vampire novelists who have been able to consistently captivate their audiences with the unique twists and turns described in each of the books in this ten novel series.

Given the high amount of praise Anne received for her first book in the series; “Interview with a Vampire”, Hollywood decided to make a movie based on the book, starring Tom Cruise, who played Lestat, Brad Pitt, who played Louise, and Kirsten Dunst, who played the role of Claudia. This movie quickly became a HUGE hit at the box office and helped rekindle interest in Vampires. Interview with the Vampire was followed many years later by a sequel to “The Vampire Lestat” called “Queen of the Damned” starring Stuart Townsend as Lestat the Vampire and Aaliyah as Akasha, Queen of the Damned. Both films featured a different version of Lestat’s character as well as a different actor for the character role itself. Still, I enjoyed both films and hope that one day soon another film will be developed from her Vampire Chronicles series that will engage audiences as much as her books.

So far we have talked about the authors Stephanie Meyer’s and Anne Rice, but I have not yet mentioned one of the oldest vampire novelists named Bram Stoker, who wrote the world famous book “Dracula”, published in 1897. This novel was the key factor responsible for the huge popularity of Vampires and was the inspiration for many vampire movies and novels today. In Bram Stoker’s Dracula, he creates a series of diaries and letters, and so the story is told throughout the book. Although the book did not immediately hit the top of the reader’s charts, the novel eventually caught on and has today been remade in several films; the most recent being Bram Stoker’s Dracula starring Keanu Reeves, which was released in 1992, nearly a century after the novel was published. As with the other vampire novel series we’ve talked about, Dracula also has a sequel called “The Undead,” which was actually written by Bram Stoker’s great-great-nephew Dacre Stoker. The novel has not yet been published, but is currently in the works, as is a film based on the novel, scheduled for June 2009 with a release date undisclosed at this time, so stay tuned for more information on that.

As you can see, Vampires have made quite a name for themselves in history, making their way into movies and literature today, captivating audiences with pure magic and lust for their powers and abilities. While it’s mind-blowing to take in all these amazing writers and producers of takes and recreations of the classic Vampire, it’s also important to understand that these things are only created for fictional entertainment.
