World Cup Goalkeepers – Yoshikatsu Kawaguchi, Japan
Yoshikatsu Kawaguchi is a Japanese goalkeeper known for his cheerful demeanor on and off the pitch. He broke into the Japanese national football team relatively early and was hailed as a hero in his country’s 0-0 win over Brazil at the Olympics. He is known for his temperament for big matches and has saved many goals in crunch situations.
Kawaguchi turned to professional football soon after finishing high school. His first major engagement was with the Yokohama Flugels. This was followed by a very successful stint at Yokohama Marinos (now known as Yokohama F. Marinos). His performance under the bars earned him a spot on the national team for the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.
This was the time when the athletic Kawaguchi’s stars shone brightly. The Japanese goalkeeper, fresh from his Olympic exploits, has signed for Portsmouth FC in a £1.8m deal
But this was one deal that didn’t work out for Kawaguchi. He could not hold his position for long and had to leave under a cloud.
The Portsmouth debacle also affected his fortunes at home as he failed to make Japan’s 2002 World Cup squad. He moved to Nordsjælland for a short time and played in the Danish league, but then returned home to join Jubil Iwata.
