Going Green at Work Tips
Indicators for going green at work
They say that a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. From an environmentalist’s point of view, this is certainly true. The widespread devastation of our planet cannot be attributed to a single event or person, but to the accumulated damage caused by generations of neglect and abuse. As such, the solution to our world’s woes does not lie in the hands of a single person, a special interest group, or even a country. It is up to each of us to do our bit and hope that the sum of all our efforts to preserve the Earth will be enough to reverse the destruction we have caused.
Here are some of the small things you can do in the workplace to make your own positive impact on the state of the world:
Save paper. Today’s paper-dependent workplaces contribute greatly to the loss of about 60,000 square kilometers of forest that are cut down each year to obtain virgin pulp for new paper. Offices are known for numerous drafts of unnecessary documents, printing the tiniest emails for “accounting purposes” and insisting on doing everything on paper. All of this waste can be avoided simply by being much more considerate and frugal in what you print. Electronic data retention exists for a reason, and today there is technology that allows virtually all materials to be easily reviewed and corrected online. If you really need something to be on paper, print on both sides. Distribute things like manuals and catalogs over the office network instead of printing a copy for everyone.
Go for reusable items. Styrofoam cups and plastic bottles can easily be found in waste bins at any workplace where they will eventually go to a landfill or other waste site. Instead, employees should bring their own reusable coffee mugs and water bottles that can be easily washed and refilled for unlimited uses. When cleaning the rest area, you may want to consider replacing the paper towels with some washcloths that can be scrubbed and reused in the future.
Recycle. It goes without saying that returning waste materials for reprocessing is the right way to go. Collect paper, plastic and cans separately in waste bins instead of mixing them together in the regular waste bin so they don’t just end up littering the earth.
Turn off, turn off, disconnect. Workplaces are notorious for producing light pollution and siphoning off a lot of excess electricity to power computers that are left on, and lighting that remains illuminating the room long after people have left for the day. Be conscientious about your electricity consumption. Turn on only the lights you really need and then turn them off, even if someone expects to use them only an hour later. At the end of the day, turn off computers and unplug them, including other devices, because electrical appliances tend to draw electricity from outlets even when not in use.
