World Cup 2010 – Guide to Accommodation in Cape Town

The World Cup football tournament will be held during June and July 2010 in South Africa, with matches scheduled in major cities. Despite the reservations of many critics, preparations are underway to make this event a success; the first hosted on the African continent. Many internet visitors looking for affordable accommodation can be confused by the great variety and choice of accommodation options and the many suburbs that make up the greater Cape Town area. It has been said that there will be a shortage of accommodation, but as the date of the matches approaches, it is clear that the expected attendance will be significantly lower than originally thought. Accommodation prices have also dropped to affordable levels in many suburbs. Cape Town offers a large selection of guest houses, bed and breakfasts and self-catering holiday accommodation that far outnumbers the number of hotel beds available. Now obviously there will be a lot of choice, but to get what you want it’s a good idea to book early.

To help visitors choose where to stay in Cape Town and where to find the type of accommodation that will best suit your needs, we’ve decided to provide you with a quick guide to Cape Town’s suburbs and what they have to offer.

If your priority is to be close to the World Cup stadium and all the exciting nightlife of Cape Town and the nearby Cape Town waterfront, you should choose accommodation in the nearby suburbs of Green Point or Sea Point and Cape Town City bowl. . However, expect to pay higher prices than in the outlying suburbs. If someone is going to offer private housing in luxury areas within walking distance of the stadium, they are likely to expect high prices.

City Bowl: The more upscale urban bowling suburbs of Tamboerskloof, Higgovale, De Waterkant, Oranjezicht and Vredehoek generally offer luxury and very expensive accommodation in large and often historic houses and guesthouses. However, you will find backpacker lodges and other cheap accommodation in the town itself. Green Point and Sea Point are close to both the stadium, the famous Waterfront and all the nightlife.

Atlantic Coast: on what is known as the Atlantic Coast you will find the exclusive residential suburbs of Clifton, Camps Bay, Bakoven, Bantry Bay which are all relatively close to the stadium. The Atlantic coast includes some of the most expensive and exclusive properties in Cape Town, as they generally have spectacular ocean views and are close to the most popular beaches. If you are looking for accommodation in the upper part of the market, accompanied by exclusivity and luxury, then you will find it here. This is also an area where beautiful people gather and you will find plenty of nightlife and a wide selection of restaurants and bars.

Hout Bay: A little further afield is the quiet fishing village of Hout Bay, where you’ll find a mix of very expensive and more affordable accommodation to choose from. If you’re looking for a quiet place to rest between matches, this might be a good option, although you shouldn’t expect to enjoy any nightlife.

Noordhoek/Kommetjie: at the southern end of the peninsula, but about a 30-minute drive from the center of Cape Town, are the villages of Noordhoek and Kommetjie, which are great choices if you want to have a quiet break and also get the most out of it. breathtaking coastal scenery can be found anywhere. Noordhoek has a wide range of accommodation from luxury to budget and generally you will find large 1 acre plots offering just one or two cottages so it is very ‘uncrowded’. It is the last bit of countryside left in Cape Town. area and easily accessible to Cape Town by road; mostly highways. Kommetjie – a surfer’s paradise – a 30 to 40 minute drive into town, you’ll find not only a relaxed environment and lifestyle, but most likely very affordable accommodation.

Southern Suburbs: There are a large number of suburbs stretching towards the False Bay coast from the city and these include the older predominantly Victorian suburbs including Mowbray, Rosebank, Wynberg and Claremont. You can expect to find reasonably priced guesthouse accommodation here, and if you don’t plan to drive, the city is easily accessible via the cheap and regular metro rail network, and public transport from the city is plentiful.

Then there are the beautiful valley suburbs of Constantia and Tokai. Constantia is home to a set of mink and dung and generally includes exclusive homes on large lots. Expect to pay a higher than average price to stay here and to rely on a rental car or driver to get around.

Southern Peninsula: On the coast of beautiful False Bay you will find the interesting older suburbs of Muizenberg, St James, Kalk bay, Fish Hoek and Simonstown. Muizenberg is still trying to shake off its shabby reputation, although it does have a great beach. St James is known as the ‘Millionaire’s Mile’ and has been a popular holiday destination for the wealthy since its inception. There is not much accommodation here or in the bohemian bay of Kalk in the vicinity and the prices will be expensive. Although these are picturesque and charming villages, when the World Cup is on, the downside is that they lose the sun behind the mountain in the early afternoon and dusk comes early. Fish Hoek, a little further down the line, has plenty of affordable choice but little to offer in terms of nightlife or diversion. It has a convenient train station to get you into the city.

Much more popular is the historic Naval Town of Simonstown. Although it’s also a quiet town, the main attraction is the kilometer of historic buildings and African penguins found at Boulders and Seaforth beaches. This city has plenty of accommodation options and many attractions, but it is the furthest from the city and may not suit those wanting to commute to the stadium.

Cape Town’s Northern Suburbs: Cape Town’s northern suburbs, which include Durbanville, are sure to have plenty of affordable accommodation; Bellville and Kraaifontein. Unfortunately, you have to deal with heavy traffic in and out of the city, which is not only far from where the action takes place, but there is no nightlife or any other form of distraction. Accommodation will certainly be cheap, but this part of our city is dead after dark.

Cape Town offers a great variety to suit all your needs, so you should be able to find what suits you. Expect a friendly welcome and some beautiful sunny days interspersed with rainy ones.
