A Few of My Favorite German Things
Germany is home to many inventors, and thus many of our modern conveniences, or at least their cruder predecessors, proudly bear the German flag. Germans are brilliant, creative and original. They are known all over the world as hardworking people and they value quality very much. Simply put, if a product is made in Germany, you can be sure that it will last you several years, maybe a lifetime.
Right now I’m thinking about the trusty old coffee maker that’s been sitting on our kitchen counter making a perfect cup of coffee every morning for many, many years. Guess what. It is made in West Germany. Try to calculate, and you will come up with the least number of years that the coffee maker has faithfully served us.
Here are the German innovations that I am very happy about, for the simple reason that they make me happy and make my life easier.
beer It is perhaps the oldest and most consumed alcoholic beverage in the world. It dates back to the early written civilization of Mesopotamia and the ancient Egyptians. The brewing process has undergone many different changes. In the past, they would add whatever they thought would “liven up” the drink, and more often than not, they ended up tasting funky. Thanks to Ludwig X and Wilhelm IV for passing the Purity Act which limited the ingredients of beer to what we know today.
scanner. We used to worry about printed photos. They could get wet, burn in a fire, or simply fade. Today, we can easily create backup copies of our old photos. Thanks to Rudolf Hehl for developing the prototype digital images.
television. Manfred von Arden has many things to thank for the couch. He is credited with the success of the first electronic television broadcast.
Automotive. In 1886, Karl Benz and Gottlieb Daimler gave the world the motorized tricycle and the motorized cart, respectively. Both vehicles, I would say, are the grandmothers of cars as we know them.
Computer. Can you imagine life without this gadget? Thanks to Konrad Zuse for inventing the electromechanical binary calculator, which was the first fully functional programmable computer, because the computer as we know it now is something most of us can no longer live without.
Toothpaste. That should explain itself, right? Thank you, Ottomar von Mayenburg.
Nuclear division. Well, you know I’m just kidding, right? It’s not one of my favorite things, but thanks to Otto Hahn, Lisa Meitner and Fritz Strassmann nonetheless. You guys rocked.
