Havaianas – Do You Know How to Spell it?
Don’t know what they are? Havaianas are trendy Brazilian flip flops – the ones with the Brazilian flag on the straps. There seem to be many ways people say and write them, from Havana – as the Cuban capital – to Jave y Anas and any number of possible combinations. The correct way is Hav-i-annas, spelled Havaianas. The name actually has nothing to do with Havana, but has to do with the Hawaiian Islands, at least the name. Hawaii is spelled Havai in Portuguese, and havaianas is the plural for Hawaiian woman.
A little history of the product is worth knowing. They may be a very popular fashion item, but it took over 40 years to reach that status. The first pair of Havaianas was made in 1962 and the design was based on Japanese sandals, so the bottom of the Havaianas has a rice pattern.
In the next 3 decades, they were sold in small shops and local shops at a low price and did not have the bright and fashionable design of modern models. The early 90s pairs were pretty basic with a white upper sole and no flag on the straps. They were called “chinelos de pobre” (flip-flops for the poor) and it wasn’t until the mid-90s that the company decided to renew its brand of cheap flip-flops and expand its range.
They ditched the white upper sole and decided to make them in more colors as well as changing the shape of the sole. They also released a range with the Brazilian flag on top to celebrate the FIFA World Cup. At the turn of the millennium, they gained increasing popularity in Brazil, and no one knows exactly how they made the leap to “world domination” – after 30 years of being sold only in Brazil, these days you can find Havaianas in more than 60 countries.
