El Salvador Soccer Team
El Salvador’s soccer team goes by many nicknames. The team was invariably called Seleccion Cuscatleca, La Azul, La Selecta and Cuscatlecos. The head coach of the team is Carlos de los Cobos and the captain of the team is Afredo Pacheco. The most capped player is Luis Guevara Mora and the team’s top scorer is Jorge “Magico” Gonzales. Their home ground is Estadio Cuscatlan. They were ranked 50th in FIFA in 1992 (their highest FIFA ranking) and in 2006, they sank to 169th, their lowest FIFA ranking.
Their first international match took place in Guatemala City, Guatemala on September 14, 1921 against Costa Rica. The Costa Ricans dominated the match with a score of 7-0. The biggest victory they had achieved was their match against Anguilla where they trampled their opponent resulting in a score of 12-0. The match was recently played in their country on February 6, 2008. They enjoyed a huge defeat even though they faced the Hungarian team. That was in 1982 where they managed to concede just one goal against Hungary’s 10.
El Salvador’s football team appeared in the World Cup twice, first in 1970 when they won the qualifying match against Honduras that resulted in the infamous Soccer War, and their second World Cup gig took place in 1982. There they were able to have their first goal in the World Cup made by Luiz Baltazar Ramirez Zapata. They had also managed to secure a place in the CONCACAF Gold Cup five times.
The proper name of El Salvador’s football team is the National Football Team of El Salvador which falls under the direct control of the Federacion Salvadoreña de Futbol. Many soccer stars came from this team including Pablo Huezo, Santiago Barrachina and Carlos Escobar. The team was officially born in 1921.
