ICC World Cup 2011: Don’t Write Off Australia Yet
Australia take on Zimbabwe in their opening match of the ICC World Cup 2011 on February 21 in Ahmedabad, and expect Ponting’s men to be firing on all cylinders against a team they should beat with relative ease.
After a couple of losses in their pre-cup practice matches against South Africa and India, Australia will want a confidence boost for their players, especially their lower middle order which has failed to fire.
With Haddi set to open with Watson, the top order looks good, especially with captain Ponting working on form with fifties in the practice games.
Watson is in ominous form, but unfortunately for Oz, he doesn’t capitalize on his good form very often. After a 161 in the opener against England in the last ODI series between the teams, he picked up a couple of fifties in the next five matches. With his wicket-taking ability as an extra seamer, Watson could be a contender for Man of The Tournament.
Haddin brings more firepower at the top of the order and Ponting would like his in-form wicketkeeper to turn his starts into big knocks.
Clarke has never lived up to his potential as a batsman after a brilliant start to his career. He isn’t the leading ODI player, but with his technical soundness, Ponting’s deputy brings solidity to the middle order, a particularly critical requirement in the absence of Mike Hussey.
After his exploits in the IPL, everyone knows how dangerous David Hussey can be; he tends to get off to a good start in almost every match, but like Haddin and Watson, never seems to tap into his best form.
White has been performing below potential lately. He started in 5 of the 6 matches he played against England but only had a top score of 45 to show for it. Incidentally, in Clarke’s absence, White captained Australia in the last ODI with England.
Steve Smith hasn’t been overly impressive with bat or ball, although he did take a few wickets against England. His continued inclusion in the squad shows the extent of Australia’s decline in international cricket. Not too long ago, much more accomplished players were dropped from the squad, regardless of performance, to make room for young talent.
Johnson is an enigma; here is a great football player who has failed more often than not when the team asked him to deliver. Add to that his batting talent that justifies pushing him up the order, even to opener, and you can only say what a waste.
Lee is in ominous form; his raw pace can trouble the best of batsmen in the deadest of wickets. Never write off Australia with their bowling top showing signs of regaining his pre-2007 wicket-taking ability.
Tait is another example of great talent lost. What is it with today’s fast bowlers who don’t have the stomach to perform at the highest level, namely Test matches? That said, Tait seems to have regained his confidence and his pace, if nothing else, could be crucial in a tight situation.
Bollinger has to be ranked as the most underrated footballer in the world. He lacks pace, a quality you expect to see in a young Australian ball carrier. But take a good look at his economy rate and his ability to take wickets, qualities that will come in handy on friendly wickets of the subcontinent batsmen.
In the end, it will be based on how well Australia do in three matches, starting with the quarter-finals. As he prepares to lead his team’s bid for four in a row, Ponting will count on a lack of expectations as his greatest ally.
