Reasons Behind I Never Witnessed a Domestic Cricket Match in Pakistan
Cricket in Pakistan is one of the most favorite pastimes that are talked about on social media, newspapers, media channels or even in gatherings of families and friends. There are fans from all parts of the country who support and appreciate cricket events in Pakistan. It helps to develop the sport both domestically and internationally. My country has not had a single international match in the last few years because of the attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team in 2009. This incident blocked the way of international cricket teams to Pakistan. However, it greatly affected the status of cricket in our country. Since the incident happened and international cricket teams were not allowed to warm up the grounds and grounds of various cities of Pakistan, which has already been the source of many records in the sport, Pakistan cricket has regressed and slowed down with a negative slope graph.
As international cricket collapsed in Pakistan, many cricket fans lost interest in cricket as the grounds of big cities like Karachi, Lahore, Rawalpindi became useless and inferior. The Pakistan Cricket Board has decided to organize domestic tournaments regularly to maintain the flow of cricket in the country. These domestic tournaments gave a platform to many young and talented players who started getting a chance to showcase their skills and abilities. Hence, the domestic cricket of Pakistan was now picking up pace to rekindle the interest of Pakistani cricket fans in the country. Major domestic tournaments under the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) included:
Pakistan Super League
Quaid-e-Azam Trophy
A pentagonal trophy
One-day national championship
Faysal Bank T20 Cup
Patron’s trophy
Pakistan Cup
As a “girl” cricket fan, I have been following cricket for the past six years. Being a Pakistani patriot, I have always been a deep supporter of the Pakistan Cricket Team. I try to keep myself excited about cricket, especially in Pakistan.
Since international cricket is not yet in full swing in our country, I have always been interested in witnessing domestic matches live. But there are many reasons that prevent me from moving to cricket grounds. The causes may not seem as different as some others in our society, but they need to be looked for and treated immediately.
There is NO proper environmental awareness. There are no relevant news programs that cater to the interest of the viewers and Pakistani cricket lovers in domestic cricket. There are several tournaments that come and go without viewers knowing about their events. This is due to the lack of marketing and interaction between the management and the audience. There is no proper infrastructure in place to promote cricket seasons among the public.
Recently in June 2017, Ramadan Cricket Tournament was organized in Karachi. I’ve seen some trailers on TV about it. Jazz t20 6th corporate cup was held at Moin Khan Cricket Academy and Naya Nazimabad cup was held at Lavai Stadium in Naya Nazimabad. I asked my mother if I could go and watch all the matches at the ground with my university friends since then, it was at the top of my wish list. The first thing she said to me was:
“Aria! Girls don’t go to the pitch, I’ve never seen a girl go to the ground to watch a home match, and you don’t know how dangerous Naya Nazimabad is. I’ll never let you go. If you want to watch, you can watch it on TV.”
My mother’s statement really disappointed me and made me realize how much these negative factors contribute to the decline of sports for young girls and women, especially in our country.
SAFETY MEASURES. We live in an Orthodox society where it is very rare for women to leave their homes for any reason. So how can a woman set foot in the ground to enjoy her favorite sport. This act is considered taboo in our society. As a cricket lover, I can never go to stadiums and grounds alone or even with my girlfriends because of the taboo nature. If I do that, there will be an audience that will start looking at me and my girlfriends. They will start commenting and discussing us. However, this will literally make me never visit any areas again. There are no separate enclosures for females where they should feel safe. There is no proper provision to cater to women who watch cricket.
More precisely, nowadays I have seen many girls ready to serve their country in cricket. Moreover, they need appropriate security measures, opportunity platforms to move forward and fulfill their role. Being a girl has left me with a lot of wishes off my wish list for the reasons above. However, the reasons must be taken into account and must be reversed to provide a safe and secure platform for the women of our country. That they voluntarily provide results for the betterment of our sport.
