World Cup History

The FIFA World Cup is an international association football competition in which the men’s national teams of the members of the International Federation of Association Football or FIFA, the sport’s global governing body.

The first international football competition in the world was a challenge match held in Glasgow in 1872. It was a match between Scotland and England. At that stage the sport was rarely played outside the United Kingdom, but grew in popularity in other parts of the world at the turn of the century. It was held as a non-prize demo sport in 1990. However, at the 1904 Summer Olympics the IOC upgraded the status to an official event.

FIFA was founded in 1904. The organization attempted to organize an international tournament between nations outside the Olympic framework in Switzerland in 1906. Throughout its early days, FIFA’s official history described the event as a failure.

As the years passed and improvements were made, it became the first world cup. Thanks to the success of the Olympic football tournament, FIFA together with the president, started the driving force again. Organizing an international tournament outside the Olympics was part of the plan. On May 28, 1928, at the FIFA Congress in Amsterdam, the plan came to fruition. It was decided to organize a world championship organized by FIFA.

Selected nations with national football associations were asked to send a team. However, Uruguay as a choice was an obstacle. This meant that the competition would be a long and expensive journey across the Atlantic Ocean for the Europeans. No European country promises to send a team until two months before the start of the competition. President Rimet, who was then FIFA president, convinced Belgium, France, Romania and Yugoslavia to participate. Thirteen nations to be exact participated in the first World Cup soccer event. Seven teams from South America, four from Europe and two from North America, all in all.
