Lake Taupo is a popular holiday destination and weekend getaway for both New Zealanders and international visitors. International Ironman

The next Ironman in Taupo is scheduled for Saturday 5th March 2011, starting at 7am. Athletes from over 35 countries travel to Taupo each year to take part in this course. Thousands of supporters come to the course offering support to the athletes as they enjoy the summer warmth.

Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge

Another physical event, the Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge is New Zealand’s premier cycling event. The next race is scheduled for Saturday 27 November 2010. Individuals and teams can take part in any of the twelve events held, which includes a 160km circuit around Lake Taupo. This event is also a joy to watch from the sideline enjoying the stunning lake and mountain views. There are spot prizes to be won and official event merchandise to purchase.

Oxfam Trailwalker event

This fantastic team race involves a team of four, a 100 km course and a time limit of 36 hours. The next Oxfam Trailwalker event will take place on Saturday 9 April 2011. This annual fundraising event supports the humanitarian, development and advocacy work of Oxfam New Zealand. With around 300 team members each year, this event certainly requires a training plan. The Oxfam Trailwalker website provides useful information and training tips to prepare teams for this event.

In addition, the World Rowing Championships to be held at Lake Karapiro not more than an hour from Taupo, and next year we will see the Rugby World Cup being held across New Zealand, with teams from Wales, Ireland and South Africa who will stay in Taupo.

If you want to attend one of the annual events, or support someone you know (or don’t), make sure you check out Taupo NZ accommodation sooner rather than later. Although there is no shortage of accommodation in Taupo, centrally located motels and hotels will book up quickly for these events. It is much more enjoyable to be able to simply walk from your motel down to the lakefront to watch the athletes in action. You might even be inspired to enter one of these events yourself next year!
