The History of the FIFA World Cup Football Trophy

Today there are many trophies presented for various sporting endeavors, however one of the most famous of them is the FIFA World Cup. However, what many people do not realize is that the FIFA World Cup Trophy awarded today has only existed since 1974. Prior to that date those nations that were winners of this particular sporting event were awarded the Jules trophy instead. It rhymes.

The main reason why a new FIFA trophy was introduced was that in 1970 Brazil were awarded the Jules Rimet trophy outright after they had won the competition three times. While they were presented with this trophy, FIFA had to organize a new trophy to replace it.

This trophy like Jules Rimet before it is very elaborate in design. On the body are two figures holding the Earth aloft and at its base are engraved “FIFA World Cup” in cast letters. The actual trophy is made of solid 18 karat gold and weighs a total of 11 pounds and stands 14.4 inches tall. To ensure the cup sits correctly, the base which is 5.1 inches wide is made from a hard carbonate mineral known as Malachite.

To be able to see the names of the winning nations in this particular trophy, you have to turn upside down. This is because the names and dates when the trophy was won are engraved on plaques in English at the bottom of the base.

Today there are still enough plaques available to allow another 9 nations to place their winning details on this trophy. Only after the FIFA World Cup competition in 2038 will a decision have to be made whether this particular trophy should be retired and replaced with a new one.

The biggest difference with this particular FIFA World Cup trophy is that it is not one that can be won outright like Brazil did with the Jules Rimet trophy. Today, even though the winning team is awarded this trophy on the day of victory, they actually don’t get to keep it and instead are presented with a replica.

The main reason for this is that after Italy won the competition in 2006, after the FIFA World Cup Trophy was reinstated, it was damaged. A few days after the trophy was presented in Italy, photos appeared in the newspapers showing that a small part of the malachite base had broken off. The damage to the trophy was repaired, but to prevent such a situation in the future, FIFA decided to no longer allow the winning nation to keep the trophy until the next tournament.

The replica FIFA World Cup Trophy that the winning nation now receives is the same size as the original. However, unlike the original, these are not made of solid gold, but instead use gold plating.
