Team Fencing, The Three Types Of Team Fencing
Team fencing is a fun way to train and compete in the sport of fencing. There are three distinct types of team fencing. Each is great for endurance training or just as something different to try. Made up of 4, 6 or 12 competitors, it’s a great way to bring team spirit to a normally individual sport.
This form of team fencing is an excellent workout for the individual fencer who wants to improve her endurance. Three fencers are in one team (tri-team) and a single fencer in the other. The single fencer faces each of the three in the tri-team in turn. It sounds easy enough, but there is a catch. The single fencer must fence each contestant from the tri-team three times with each match worth five points for a total of 45 points.
Here’s the breakdown… The first fencer from the triple team competes with 5 points, then fencer 2 starts from what fencer 1 got up to 10 points, fencer 3 then goes to 15 using the points accumulated by the 2 fencers seen. This continues until the triple or single fencing team reaches 45 points.
The six fence format is most often seen in competitions. It has become so popular that it is now a World Cup event. This version of team fencing is relatively easy to understand. Each fencer uses the same type of weapon, (blade, epee or saber).
Competitors are divided into 2 teams of 3 (this will be predetermined in the World Cup as it is 3 people from each participating country). The order of matches varies for each team, but the idea is for each of the 3 fencers from group 1 to fence each of the 3 people from group 2 (round robin style). The basics are the same as the “4 FENCERS” method in that each match is worth 5 points and the winning team is first with 45 points.
This form of team fence is especially helpful in building team spirit and camaraderie. Since fencing is normally a solo sport, it is often a surprise to see those competitors who are normally introverted and reserved, loudly cheering on their team.
The final form includes twelve participants. In this competition there are two teams consisting of six fencers each. Each team must consist of one female and one male, one female and one male epee, and one female and one male saber.
Based on gender and weapon discipline, each fences each other at intervals of 5, just like the other team’s fencing variations. However, this event ends at 30 points.
Since the matches are timed, it is highly desirable that the strongest competitor (anchor) is the last competitor, because there can be many points that need to be accumulated in a short time to achieve victory. The very important order in which the wardens compete is usually decided on the piste by various methods used such as pulling straws.
