Indian Cricket’s World Cup Debacle

Cricket is a passion in India. Cricketers are always treated like gods. That is why when India lost a match against Bangladesh in the ongoing 2007 Cricket World Cup, cricket fans went berserk. There were many protests in the streets. The images of their idols were broken and some of them even burned the effigies of their idols. Most fans know that “Cricket is a game of glorious uncertainties”. However, when India lose, it is not always glorious for them. Considering Indians fans’ passion for the game, their reaction is understandable, but not justifiable. No Indian fan in his wildest dream would have thought that India would lose to the underdogs of world cricket, Bangladesh. What was more shocking for them was that by losing to Bangladesh, India lost a vital opportunity to enter the Super 8 stage. There was no denying that India played badly as their best batsmen went wrong. It always happens in cricket. But this defeat deprived India of its World Cup hunt is truly pathetic.

I am not defending India for their poor performance. However, when I look at the format of the World Cup, I feel something uneasy about the way the ICC has formatted the match. I strongly feel that India and Pakistan have the potential and deserve to be in the super 8 stage. However, both failed due to their loss to a less potential team. Everyone knows how Bangladesh and Ireland suffered a humiliating defeat at the hands of other super 8 teams. If India and Pakistan were there, surely the super 8 stage matches would be more competitive and interesting.

The format of the World Cup would be better if the teams in the league stage were given the opportunity to play the other team twice. I strongly believe that it will deprive the less potential teams from going to the next stage. You can randomly win a match once, but not twice.

I hope the ICC would have realized their mistake and made the necessary improvements in the format at least in the next World Cup. Fans always love to watch races with equally likely teams.
