Today, Mr. Rajdeep Sardesai is not only India’s best journalist but also the author of his recently published book titled, “2014 – The Election That Changed India”. In the recent past I had the opportunity to meet this prolific newscaster during a casual conversation.

Early aspirations

They say, “Life is what happens to you when you’re busy making other plans.” While young Rajdeep was very famous for playing cricket. His father Late Dilip Sardesai was a prominent Indian Test cricketer in the 1960s. His mother Nandini Sardesai worked as a professor of sociology at St. Mary’s College. Xavier in Mumbai.

Rajdeep always loved playing cricket and was represented while playing at the university level. Here he had a close interaction with the well-known right-handed batsman, Mr. Sanjay Manjrekar.

Education / Career

Before taking up journalism, Rajdeep aspired to become a lawyer. He first completed his Bachelor’s course in Economics from St. Xavier. Post which he went to England to study at Oxford University and earned the following degrees namely Master of Arts (MA) and Bachelor of Laws (LLB).

On his return from England in 1988 he decided to start his legal career by practicing law in India. But fate had its own plans for Rajdeep. It was at the same time when Rajdeep was considering “Lawyer” as his profession, he had the opportunity to meet the eminent journalist and the then current editor of “The Times of India” (TOI) Mr. Dileep Padgaonkar.

Rajdeep, being a compulsive reader and writer, the thought of joining TOI appealed to him. He first started writing for TOI and later worked there for a short period of six years and was the city editor of its Mumbai publication.

I was fortunate enough to enter the field of journalism at a time when many events and happenings were happening within our country. Had there not been any great upheaval in the country, however any journalist can aspire to write, the fact remains that what is the topic that the journalist would choose and amplify their thoughts that would attract the voice of the readers. Rajdeep admits that fate was kind enough to allow him to enter the field of journalism at an opportune time, which gave him tremendous opportunities to enhance his strengths and competencies.

The influence of parents

Rajdeep had a knack for General Knowledge and was always looking for answers beyond what the textbooks could provide and that too at a very young age. One thing was clear that his thirst for knowledge was ever increasing as he wanted to know more about the world and his surroundings.

What would be the future of his chosen profession, precisely “Television Journalism”, was something that even his parents were not very aware of. All they could do at that moment was believe in his strength and motivate him on his journey of discovery.

Rajdeep Sardesai is a successful name today but there were risks he took and dared to achieve. The moment he decided to leave NDTV and start his own venture “CNN IBN” his parents were worried as he was already well on his career path. However, as Rajdeep wanted to follow his dreams, his parents allowed him to take the risk and go that extra mile.

Rajdeep has also been the President of the Editors Association of India, the only TV journalist to hold this post and was also selected as a Global Leader for Tomorrow by the World Economic Forum in 2000.

Commitment to Craftsmanship

Rajdeep Sardesai’s commitment to his chosen craft is commendable. He is passionate about work and works round the clock to achieve importance and excellence. Reading is as much about his mind as exercise is about his body. Never complacent, despite his near-star status, he firmly believes that when there’s work, it must be done, and there are times when Rajdeep doesn’t take his weekly vacation.

He believes in the accuracy of details and in his farewell letter written to the staff of IBN 18 he says: “Sorry if I called at 3am every now and then. Blame it on being a news junkie. And remember, every time there’s a typo in the box, my ghost will haunt you.”

I would like to summarize my part in his words, “I think some things in life are written in the stars. Editorial independence and integrity have been articles of faith in 26 years in journalism and maybe I’m too old now to change.”
