Whitianga Top Tourist Attractions – A Must See and to Do Guide to Whitianga, NZ
The palm-lined esplanade is the center of this bustling town of cafes, restaurants and bars overlooking Whitianga Marina and Harbour. Sit back and enjoy your culinary delights while you think about which of the endless activities to do next.
The stunning views of the marina from Salt Restaurant & Bar are more than matched by the wonderful food and first-class service. This is a popular lunch spot for alfresco dining on the spacious deck, enjoying fresh seafood and local farm-to-table cuisine.
The Fireplace Restaurant is another popular dining spot with gourmet wood-fired pizzas and open fires in a spacious, rustic setting that oozes old-world charm. Good food is worth the wait even at peak times; you can wait a long time for a table, but locals and visitors alike all say it’s worth it for the great food, great location and great times.
Fireplace is very close to Whitianga Wharf where you can catch the Whitianga Ferry and take a short trip across the harbor to the Ferry Landing. From here, choose from many safe and accessible swimming beaches, including Front Beach, Flaxmill Bay, Lonely Bay and Cooks Beach.
Hiking and Trekking walks
Nestled between Flaxmill Bay and Cooks Beach is Shakespeare Cliff, an impressive scenic reserve and immense rock edifice clad in natural bush. A walk to the top rewards visitors with stunning views of the ocean, bay and nearby Lonely Bay and Cooks Beach. You can walk to Lonely Bay, a picturesque beach popular as a wedding venue or continue to Cooks Beach.
Cooks Beach is 3km of crescent-shaped golden sandy beach overlooking Center Island, a popular diving and fishing spot. A safe swimming beach, you can also hire kayaks off the beach and explore the beach, surrounding rock outcrops and the pristine waters of the nearby Marine Reserve. Teeming with marine life, this reserve also contains the world-famous, magnificent cathedral-shaped cave called Cathedral Cove.
Fishing and coastal cruising
Whitianga is the place to go out, in, on or under the water. If you prefer to stay dry, head to Whitianga Marina and go big fishing with Rod of R&R Charters. Whether you are experienced or new to fishing, the Rod is great value and will help you catch those big fish. You can also take a leisurely boat ride in Cathedral Cove on the Cathedral Cruiser or view the underwater world from one of several glass-bottomed boats.
For something a little more adventurous, head to Dive HQ and learn to dive or if time is of the essence, take one of their organized diving and snorkelling trips. These guys can also take you kayaking and show you the delights of Whitianga Harbor and Cathedral Cove.
Hot Water Springs
For something luxurious, try lost resources. This is one of Coromandel’s main attractions and is a testament to determination, perseverance and never giving up on your dream.
Inspired by old stories of a lost thermal spring in the Coromandel, Alan Hopping spent 20 years searching for the source. His eventual success led to the creation of the Lost Spring Thermal Resort in Whitianga, a spectacular suite of heated pools fed by crystal clear geothermal water set in beautiful native forest. Relax and unwind in the resort’s soothing waters, pamper yourself with a spa treatment or dine at 18sixtyfive, the resort’s restaurant and bar.
One way to see Whitianga and the Coromandel is by helicopter. Coromandel Helicopters based at Whitianga Airport fly scenic flights across the Coromandel, but for an absolute thrill sure to get your heart racing, fly over the Pinnacles Range and mountain bike the 2,300 vertical feet of adrenaline pumping downhill.
Whitianga Scollop Festival
The end of August heralds Whitianga’s gastronomic event of the year, the Scallop Festival. This event is sold annually with more than 100,000 scallops harvested, cooked, marinated and presented in every possible way imaginable to delight and tantalize the palate. A large sheltered village houses over 60 food and wine stands serving an array of delicious seafood, fresh produce, locally brewed wines and beers. Must try Cathedral Cove Macadamias Scallop and Macadamia Fishcakes, Fired’s Scallop and Fired Seafood Pizza or Beaches ‘Scally Pops’ Meatloaf. This is a spin on the classic New Zealand hot dog and features a homemade gourmet sausage wrapped around scallops served on a stick.
There is so much to do in Mercury Bay and Whitianga that it is easy to see why this is a top tourist destination for visitors to the Coromandel. So come and visit Mercury Bay and Whitianga and see what makes this such a great place. But be prepared to stay a while as there is too much to do for a short stay.
