Achieving Goals Through Patience – Is Patience Out Of Date In The Modern World?
Patience, whether in achieving goals or anything else, is not a popular virtue in the modern world. How valuable is patience today?
A young woman in Great Britain has just been sentenced to 20 years in prison. She wanted to make a quick three million pounds by killing rich people.
As part of her plan, she committed a murder on trial by stabbing a polite neighbor 14 times. I’m surprised she had enough patience to perform a test kill before moving on to her main targets.
A less extreme example of impatience can be found in the world of cosmetic surgery where people are ready to suffer the surgeon’s knife to lose fat quickly. They are not prepared to eat less and exercise more.
On the Internet you are promised that you can learn how to write a book in fourteen days or even seven days. Whether such a book was worth reading has not been closely scrutinized.
However, I think there is a place for such promises, because they inspire people to start and write something. Without such inspiration, many would-be authors will never write anything. Writing can always be improved later.
Some people patiently wait their whole lives to achieve a goal and then die before they even get started! Perhaps the idea of patience is misunderstood in the modern world.
For example, patience has been described as the ability to “sit back and wait for an expected outcome without experiencing anxiety, tension, or frustration.”
This description can describe someone’s experience in a toilet seat! There is no need to sit back and do nothing whether it is on the toilet or elsewhere. However, acting without anxiety, tension and frustration can only be a good thing.
One can work hard and urgently on any project and still be so detached from the results that anxiety, tension, and frustration are avoided.
Patience, then, does not mean sitting back and waiting for good things to happen; it means working hard but calmly and trusting that the results will show eventually.
I just came across this quote that fits the above point exactly:
“The way to manifest (create the reality you want) effectively is to use patience and consistent action at the same time.”
Incidentally, before we get off the topic of toilets or toilets, the average lifetime spent on the toilet is three years. A lot of reading can be done in three years – the same time it takes to achieve a university degree!
Geoff Thompson, martial arts expert and author, wrote his first book on toilet paper in the bathroom of the factory where he worked! Now he is a successful author of books, plays and films.
Moving on from the fascinating subject of toilet action, my Taekwondo instructor once offered a black belt to anyone who asked for it.
They understood the lesson he was trying to teach. If you do not have the patience to train step by step for your black belt over a period of years, you do not deserve to have a black belt and are unlikely to have developed the skills worthy of such an honor.
Most martial arts help their students achieve black belt by allowing them to step through the colored belt ladders which break down the goal of achieving black belt into smaller steps. Most people can muster enough patience to aim for their next belt over a period of two or three months.
Mercifully, the need for patience for goals is also limited in other ways. We don’t have to patiently rely on other people to achieve our goals for us. A great benefit in life is that we can usually make things happen on our own. We should not wait for other people to take action on our behalf. You can train as much as you want to achieve your black belt. You don’t have to rely on a friend to train with you.
We have the wonderful gift of being able to take as many actions as we desire in pursuit of our goals. Nor should we depend on certificates to qualify us to achieve our goals. Earl Nightingale said that an hour a day of study can put you at the top of your field within three years
When I watch the current soccer World Cup competition, I have to remind myself that there is nothing I can do to win a match. I bought English flags for my car, but that was as far as I could get without moving to Germany and buying a ticket!
However, I can support my goal of achieving one hundred percent effort. We can patiently work in a stress-free manner on our dreams and goals. We should not look forward to others working for us.
We can be urgent in our efforts and actions, but patient about the results.
Results take time. A tree does not grow overnight although a weed can! Patience is necessary especially when results seem never to come.
When we become impatient for results, we make mistakes. A few years ago, I was inspired by a seminar on making money fast by buying stocks. I ended up losing £27,000 to a scam company based in Buenos Aires.
Most road accidents are the result of impatience as people drive too fast or try to jump traffic lights or overtake in the wrong place. A Chinese proverb sums things up:
“A moment of patience can avert great calamities. A moment of impatience can destroy a whole life.”
Patience allows us to let go of our need for instant results and instant gratification. This allows us to wait long enough for someone to cook a delicious and healthy meal rather than an unhealthy ready-made meal.
My brother visits once a week and cooks a wonderful meal. He has the patience to first read the recipe and then buy the right ingredients and then cook them according to the instructions. He’s the opposite of me and my dentist who says, “Life’s too short to stuff mushrooms!”
My dentist and I don’t appreciate that filling mushrooms with healthy ingredients can extend life as we begin to eat more healthy food. In fact stress, caused by impatience and the relentless rush of the modern world, is now seen as the biggest health hazard. Patience can literally save lives.
Patience is also of great value in human relationships. No one likes to work or live with a tense and irritable person. People who show compassion and understanding to those who are less on the receiving end or who don’t know how to behave are worth their weight in gold.
A brief moment of impatience can ruin a relationship for years to come. Every time I have exploded in anger and impatience, little good has come of it even if the anger was completely justified. Irritation can easily lead to long-term resentment and even physical confrontation
We must also be patient with ourselves. Everyone makes mistakes. Mistakes do not mean the end of our goals and dreams. They can become stepping stones to achieving our plans as we learn from them.
A whole book and not just an article could be written about the value of patience, but the following points are worth thinking about:
Patience does not mean waiting for things to happen. Urgent and quick action can be combined with patience for results. Patience also allows you to focus on your actions rather than the results of your actions. You don’t waste time watching the pot to see when it will boil.
If you lack patience, you can buy a black belt or a university degree. But such honors mean nothing if you don’t have the patience to put in the hours necessary to qualify for them.
It’s a waste of time to be impatient about how your national team performs in a competition. There is nothing you can do about it. However, you can take action on your goals and projects. Besides, you don’t need anyone else’s permission to become an expert in the areas that interest you.
Patience can help you eat healthy food and avoid stress and stress-related illnesses. It could even save your life.
Patience can improve your relationships. It can help you avoid violent confrontations that could injure or kill you or land you in jail. Develop patience and you will have and keep many friends and even admirers.
The power of patience is not only needed today. It is of crucial importance and is essential to the achievement of the most worthwhile goals.
