Golf Mental Strategy – The Professionals Have One, Do You?
If you’ve played the golf course more than once, you’ll begin to develop an attitude toward certain holes that can affect your game. A successful finish on a difficult hole can increase your ability to successfully navigate that hole in the future. The reverse is also true: if for some reason your tee shot goes wrong and you spend the rest of the hole trying to recover from one bad shot after another, that will also be recorded. After you play the course for the first time, you must develop a mental strategy to achieve the best possible score.
It’s amazing to watch the pros go to different golf courses week after week, and no matter the conditions, they get good results and meet the demands of the course. In most cases, for a 4-day tournament, they arrive on Monday or Tuesday at the latest, usually play a pro tournament on Wednesday, and start by Thursday. In their mental golf game, they have already developed strategies for the techniques they will use to conquer the more difficult holes.
Here are some questions to think about when you play the course for the first time. Use these questions to formulate your strategy for your next visit.
- Should I use a driver to start on this hole? Sometimes the driver will give you more trouble. In many cases, the best option would be to use a club with less distance that you can control to set yourself up for the next shot. A driver can take you the distance you want, but it’s not the most accurate club in your bag. If you can shape your shots with a driver, use it. If this distance takes you across the fairway into a deep ditch, this is not the best club to use.
- What is the best putter I can use to hit the shot I want? Are you at 120 yards and under some trees, or are you using your 9 iron? (Stupid question I know, but unfortunately I’ve seen this happen more than once) Maybe a low flight 5 iron chip or a stinger would be a better club.
- Is it always best to shoot straight into the hole? Should I always push the ball towards the goal? If you hit a big problem, like behind a tree, it’s best to take your next shot to get back on the fairway so your next shot is timed to get you there. I see it all the time, people trying impossible shots that most professionals wouldn’t do.
- Where is the flag on the green? What is the best angle to approach the flag. Generally, this doesn’t come into play very often, however there are times when the placement of the pin means you can get much better access to it from the left or right side. When you’re taking your first shot, this is very useful to know. Pin placement on the back left of the green is much more accessible on the right side than over the bunker on the left.
- Is the shot I’m going to shoot within my capabilities? I know you’ve seen Phil Mickelson hit that fantastic butterfly lob from the hillside. Have you practiced this throw enough to be able to pull it off? If not, use the shot you’re sure of.
- When do you lie down? You are 230 yards from the hole, but there is a lake to cross a hundred yards down the fairway. Too many times I see that the odds of getting a perfect fairway boomer with your three trees are far less than a couple of good wedge shots. The first shot will keep your ball dry, the second might be in the cup!
- Does my previous experience on that hole affect how I perform today? So, when was the last time you played, something or other happened and you had a bad experience with that hole. Does this mean that every time you play this hole something bad will happen? Take your time exploring the hole. Course designers lay out many holes with visual obstructions that really shouldn’t affect your shot, but they do if you let them. You start on a hole with a lake running down the right side, and the lake seems to creep into the center of your vision, even though the fairway is right in front of you. Focus on your perfect fairway shot, your previous layup shouldn’t determine today’s game.
Save these questions for the next time you take the course. They can help you improve your score, especially in the second round on a new course. Below is a nice video that illustrates some of the things I mentioned.
Hit them straight and infrequently.
