Australia Vs Zimbabwe Cricket World Cup 2011
Defending champions Australia’s opening match once again proves the fact that the minnows are a complete mismatch in a world-renowned tournament like the ICC Cricket World Cup. After Bangladesh, Kenya and Canada, it is now Zimbabwe’s turn to be humiliated by top-level teams like Australia.
However, it was not a one-sided game in the early stages. The Zimbabwean bowlers maintained good line and length and restricted Australia to just 262. Orthodox spinner Ray Price’s ploy to start the left-arm attack proved to be very beneficial for the Zimbabweans. This proves yet again how the Australian batting team struggles on the turning pitches of the subcontinents.
Barring Shane Watson and Michael Clarke, none of the Australian batsmen seemed comfortable against the Zimbabwean bowlers. The run rate has also suffered as most batsmen’s strike rates are surprisingly low. However, it was Shane Watson who patiently made 79 runs off 92 balls and contributed a lot in helping the team reach the 250 mark. He was well supported by Clarke who again showed his superb skills and played 58 knocks while facing only 55 deliveries .
Going into bat, it never looked like Zimbabwe would be able to reach the target. The fiery pace attack of Brett Lee, Shaun Tait and Mitchell Johnson may be too good for the Zimbabwean batsmen. Although opener Charles Coventry gave some hints of dominating the Australian bowling line-up but he also fell prey to the same.
Johnson bowled a fine spell of 9.2 overs and picked up four crucial wickets at an economy rate of just 2.03. Tait and Jason Craze shared two wickets each, with Lee taking a vital Coventry wicket. This disciplined bowling performance from the world champions literally left no stone unturned to ensure victory for Australia. Zimbabwe pulled out all the stops, scoring 171 in 46.2 overs.
Shane Watson was declared Man of the Match for his consistent and flawless innings. When most of his fellow batsmen are failing to cope with the slow bounce of the Motera Stadium in Ahmedabad, it was Watson who stood up front and managed the innings expertly. The innings consisted of eight fours and one six at a strike rate of nearly 85.86.
To be fair, it never looked like Zimbabwe could influence the outcome of the game. They were outclassed in every aspect of the game, proving yet again the difference in quality between the two teams. However, it would be interesting to see how Zimbabwe fare in their upcoming match against Canada on February 28 in Nagpur. Australia, on the other hand, are ready to take on the challenge of their arch-rivals at the aforementioned venue on February 25.
