American Soccer Disappoints Again in the World Cup
The 2006 World Cup would be our year to show the world that we belong on the world stage in football. The Americans boasted a squad with plenty of international experience and a hunger to show the world they belonged. Coming into the 2006 World Cup, the United States team was ranked fifth in the world by FIFA. Another big sign of hope was that the Americans reached the quarter-finals of the 2002 World Cup, which gave everyone hope that this could be the year it all came together. For one of the first times I could remember that people in America were actually excited about the World Cup.
The first soccer game for the United States was against the dangerous Czech Republic. The United States put in a poor performance and were dominated by the Czechs 3-0. This loss was a big blow to the psyche of the American football team, but it would help them focus on the next game. One of the best teams in the tournament, Italy was next for the Americans, so things looked bleak. It looked like Team USA would be disappointed again. However, the American soccer team displayed the skill and toughness that everyone expected to see from them this year, and fought to a 1-1 draw against the Italians. With Ghana beating the Czech Republic, American soccer once again had an opportunity. If Italy beat the Czechs and the United States won against Ghana, the Americans would be in the World Cup quarterfinals again. Italy defeated the Czech Republic, but the United States suffered a very disappointing loss to Ghana, 2-1.
After a disappointing first-round exit from the 2006 World Cup, the US soccer team dropped from 5th to 16th in the FIFA world rankings. This was a major obstacle in the American’s struggle to reach the top in football. We won’t be disappointed for long, though, because the women’s soccer team is gearing up to make its run at the upcoming World Cup. Once again we will have to pin all our hopes on the women’s football team to win on the world stage.
