They say, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. But does it really apply to the food we eat? Well, many people would appreciate it: they believe that one man’s nightmare is another man’s delicacy. From cow’s tongue to fried worms to cooked termite to frog’s legs, the list of strange foods is endless. In fact, the winged termite is said to be nutritious, providing a good source of protein and fat.
If you’ve been indulging lately and need a reason to diet, read on and you might just lose your appetite. Here is the list of some of the weirdest and weirdest foods around the world:
• Stuffed Camel – The recipe may sound really strange to you, a whole camel stuffed with a whole lamb, the lamb is stuffed with chickens and 20 whole chickens stuffed with eggs and rice. According to the Guinness Book of Records, this recipe is listed as the largest item on any menu in the world. The sheer amount of food this dish makes deserves a spot on the list.
• Balut – A fertilized duck or chicken egg, with a half-developed embryo that is boiled and eaten in the shell, can easily be considered one of the strangest foods in the world. It is very common in the Philippines and Cambodia and can be seen being sold by street vendors. Balut is said to taste like egg and duck, and sometimes you find it extremely strange.
• Fugu – The Fugu, or blowfish, is one of the deadliest creatures of the sea. It can only be done by some chefs, as they need a special license with two to three years of training to prepare and serve it. According to studies, the toxins in this fish are far more deadly than cyanide and cause numbness in the mouth.
• Casu Marzu – Found in the Italian countryside, Casu Marzu is essentially a cheese that is home to live insect larvae. These larvae are added in order to promote fermentation, to the point where the fats of the cheese can be broken down. While eating, small worms can jump up to a distance of almost half a foot, therefore, it is preferable to clean the insects before eating.
• Sannakji – If you are a faint hearted person then this Korean food is not meant for you. In Sannkaji, live baby octopus is sliced and tossed with sesame oil. When the dish is served, you can see the tentacles still squirming. During chewing, you should be very careful, as if you do not chew carefully; small cups can get stuck in your mouth and throat. Delicious, isn’t it?
• Various Stewed Animal Parts – In this Taiwanese food, all you have to do is choose the ingredients you want and put them in a basket. The vendor will then boil the ingredients and give them to you. The ingredients can be anything from duck tongue, chicken intestines, shrimp juices and what not. You can also add mushrooms and noodles if you can’t stomach all the animal parts together. Look, they have a variety for you!
