Take 5 – Growing Closer to God in Just a Few Minutes Each Day
When you think of the word “prayer,” what comes to mind? Is he on his knees with his eyes closed and his face reverently turned to the sky? Pray for an hour or more? Do you “prepare” yourself spiritually through religious ritual, such as the ACTS (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving and Supplication) formula?
Or when you pray, do you just befriend God and talk to Him for a few minutes, sharing your heart openly?
This is how I pray, and I encourage you to do the same. Jesus is not only my Savior, my Redeemer, my King, but also my best Friend. When I pray, I just talk to Him and He talks to me. It’s a conversation, an intimate relationship between us, like having a good cup of coffee with a friend (or, if you’re not a coffee drinker, remember your favorite drink).
You don’t have to pray for hours every day or assume a certain physical posture to pray. In order to pray, it is not necessary to “purify yourself”. The blood that Jesus Christ shed for you on Calvary was enough; God is the one who cleanses you because of the atoning and finished work of Jesus over 2,000 years ago.
You don’t have to wait in long lines or wait for ten minutes after pressing 1, 2, 4 or 7 on your phone to reach the right participant.
God doesn’t take vacations, and He doesn’t wait for a call. He already has you in his DayPlanner every day – He’s just waiting to BE with you!
In just a few minutes a day, you can become closer to God. Many people are judged because they think they “should” pray for at least an hour every day or hours, or only in the early morning – you know, “like Jesus did”.
The Bible does give examples of how Jesus went alone early in the morning to the mountains or other secluded places to pray. But this does not mean that He prayed ONLY in the early morning. God does not lock the doors of heaven at 9 am with a big sign saying, “You missed me! Try again tomorrow before dawn!”
God loves you so much and He is ALWAYS there for you, wanting to hear from you. Song of Songs 2:14 says, “O my dove, in the clefts of the rock, in the secret places of the rock, Let me see your face, Let me hear your voice, For your voice is sweet, And your face is beautiful.”
Did you hear that? God says your voice is NICE and your face is NICE to HIM! God is wild about you. He is there for you at 4 o’clock in the afternoon or midnight, ready to spend time with you. You don’t have to be a morning person. I certainly don’t (and super fun morning people get on my nerves lol!).
Many times my time with God is late at night, right before bed. Your devotional time with God can be whenever you can get away with Him. He created you with your own internal clock; He gets you! So pray at night. Then sleep well. God does not need! In fact, He stays up all night caring for His people. Psalm 121:4 says, “The Defender of Israel neither slumbers nor slumbers.” What a relief that God is not in heaven snoring while the whole world descends into chaos!
God can’t wait to talk to you, no matter what time it is. You can pray at the kitchen counter while you prepare lunch for the little ones. You can pray in the afternoon when you go to sleep. You can pray before bed after a long, tiring day. You can pray at 2 am while feeding your baby.
You can pray while driving on the highway during rush hour. You can pray in the shower, on a hike, or mowing the lawn. You can pray sitting, lying down, kneeling, walking, running, dancing, jumping, washing, shopping, knocking, whatever!
The point is to spend time with God consistently every day. Talk to Him like a friend. All that matters is that you develop this intimate relationship with Him through daily prayer, study of His word, and worship of Him.
In the morning, as you prepare for your day, you can simply say a prayer of thanksgiving for a brand new, wonderful day with His new mercies. Whether you’re brushing your hair, brushing your teeth, shaving, or frying bacon, you can dedicate this day to God and ask for His wisdom and guidance in your life today.
While picking up the dry cleaning or your husband’s dirty socks from the floor, you can pray and ask God to bless your husband to help him walk in God’s way of light and truth. When you prepare food, you can thank God for His bountiful provision and blessing, and pray for those who are without food today in the slums of America or in third world countries, and ask God to provide for them.
As you drop your kids off at school or say goodbye to them as they get off at the bus stop, or as you prepare for homeschooling, you can pray and thank God for the wonderful privilege of being a mom or dad—these precious gifts He has given you to bless your life and give you such joy.
When you are tired and worn out, you can ask Him for strength. When times are hard, when you are hurting, you can just call on the name of Jesus and He will be there right away.
You can spend a few minutes each day reading passages from the Bible or from a prayer, and even commit these verses to memory by sticking them on your bathroom mirror or repeating them to yourself throughout the day.
By taking a daily walk or exercising on the treadmill, you can pray and thank God that you are still healthy and ask Him to help you with the discipline to get fitter and healthier. Or you can just enjoy nature, drink in this wonderful world that He has created for you and me.
Prayer is simply communication with God. You pour out your heart to Him, as Hannah did in the Bible when she prayed for her son, sharing with Him every day the small and the big. Listening to Him is that still, small voice of Love. Doing what He tells you to do. It’s like texting or email – instant access to the throne of God – no busy signals or rejections!
You and I may not even have an hour to spare every day from our hectic, busy schedules for prayer and Bible reading. But we have at least five minutes a day to be with Him. If time permits, we can make even more time for prayer in our schedule.
The more time you spend with God, the more you will want it! Your hunger for Him and His word will grow. Start making room for small chunks of time throughout the day to just be aware of Jesus’ presence and pray quietly. Tell Him what is on your mind and heart. He really cares and wants to help you and be there for you.
By listening to His instruction and His word at the proper time. Perhaps He will give you a word of encouragement that you can say to your husband, your child, your co-worker, your neighbor, the lady at the post office. His presence and Spirit anoint you to bring the good news to others. heal the sick, free the captives. Take up your cross, deny yourself and follow Him.
God has given you a loving invitation right now to come and spend some time with Him. The door is wide open. Will you take five now and stretch out with Him? He is waiting only for you.
