The English word trophy is derived from the French word “trophee” and the Greek word “tropaion”. The Greek word “tropaion” means to destroy and the French word “trophee” basically means spoils of war.
For the Greek, the trophies started from the battlefield. The winning team made a warrior figure out of the arms and standards of the defeated team. This figure was hung on a tree and carved with battle stories and dedicated to the god and later destroyed as sacrilege.
