EPL Preview – Chelsea Vs Stoke City

Stamford Bridge host Stoke City on Saturday, even as Chelsea bid for a third win in as many Premier League games.

The champions are on the list, having scored half a dozen goals, while conceding none, in each of the two games they have played against West Brom Albion and Wigan Athletic respectively.

While Chelsea are the only team to have recorded wins in both of their matches, Stoke City have lost both, by identical 2-1 scores, to Wolverhampton Wanderers and Tottenham Hotspur.

But against Spurs, Stoke were unlucky not to equalize after being denied a goal by referee Chris Foy.

A Carling Cup win against Shrewsbury should ensure Stoke go into Saturday’s game in a positive mood.

Carlo Ancelotti would be wary of complacency after big wins against weaker rivals and Chelsea would do well not to lose focus as back-to-back games against Manchester City, Aston Villa and Arsenal await in September.

Chelsea’s defense has been strengthened with the return to form of Alex and Cech, somewhat offsetting the loss of Ricardo Carvalho’s side.

Didier Drogba, Florent Malouda and Michael Essien will be key to Chelsea’s fortunes this season.

Drogba’s four assists in the last game more than made up for him not scoring a single goal himself.

While Kalou, Malouda and Anelka play a major supporting role, Drogba’s ball skills and goal-scoring ability remain the icing on Chelsea’s Premiership cake.

Lampard has been as effective as ever in midfield, without setting fire to the stands.

While Chelsea are unlikely to be unfairly tested by their rivals in the next three games, they will be looking to maintain their tenuous lead as Manchester United drop a point.

Although, it’s early days, still.

Stoke City must be rightly disappointed with their dismal start to their Premier League season.

Last week’s loss to Spurs will weigh, especially. A goal disallowed after crossing the line brought back memories of Lampard’s disallowed goal against Germany at the World Cup in South Africa.

While defense is Stoke’s strong suit, with plenty of choice in Abdoulaye Faye, Ryan Shawcross, Robert Huth, Danny Collins and Danny Higginbotham, attack is not their forte.

And that was why all of Stoke’s industry in the Spurs game didn’t quite translate into scoring opportunities.

Going back to defence, thanks to their strength in this area, Stoke have managed to salvage draws in many away games.

Matthew Etherington is a talented midfielder whose passing is crucial to Stoke’s effectiveness on the pitch.

Rory Delap, Dean Whitehead and Glen Whelan are all midfielders who can be counted on to fight hard.

In some bad news for Stoke, Mamaday Sidibie suffered an Achilles tendon injury in the Spurs game, which will rule him out against Chelsea.

There is consolation in the form of Kenwyne Jones and Jon Walters coming in to bolster the attack, along with Ricardo Fueller.

The burly Jones is just what the doctor ordered for Stoke, who were low in the goalscoring department last off-season, and the striker’s form could determine whether Stoke climb the table. it the season.

As for Saturday’s game against Chelsea, Stoke will likely have their plates too full, defensively, to worry too much about any other aspect of their game.
