Cricket Facts, Cricket Records, and the True Meaning of "Nelson"

Cricket facts have been created for more than 1000 years and detailed records have been kept since the first test match in 1877. By its very nature, the game has generated huge amounts of statistics and records, as well as a rich collection of terms and stories of cricket. So when you are faced with a tricky question about, say, Nelson, or a Doosra, or whether both batsmen were ever run out at the same time, then you need to know where to look.

The Wisden Cricket Almanack (Wisden for short) is the most famous cricket reference book on the planet. It was first produced in 1864 by English cricketer John Wisden, and has been published every year since. At around 1500 pages long, it is simply the bible of cricket facts.

Modern editions are complementary to the Wisden-affiliated website Cricinfo. This is probably the most comprehensive cricket site in the world and contains an extensive archive of cricket data and statistics. Cricinfo Statsguru is a great tool to find every cricket fact about countries, players, grounds and officials. If you need to settle a debate between cricket fans, or just check the form, then this is the place to look.

The sport has also created an extensive list of cricket terms, some of which are surprising to newcomers to the game. A Google search of “Nelson” reveals much about the English Sea Lord and a Lancashire town of the same name. However, for the English batsmen, Nelson means 111 and is the unluckiest number in the game. The superstitious custom is to remove one or both feet from the ground until the effect persists.

Why 111? The term was coined in the belief that Lord Nelson was unlucky enough to only have one eye, one arm and one leg. Nelson was not so unlucky as he actually had two legs, but the term cricket has survived all attempts by historians to correct it. And superstition – watch out for cricket umpire David Shepherd, who keeps one foot off the ground by hopping from one foot to the other!

And what about “Doosra”. This bowling delivery is a variation of the off spinner developed by Pakistan Test bowler Saqlain Mushtaq. The conventional off spin is separated from the fingers of a right-handed bowler with the palm facing the batsman and is rotated from the right arm to the leg arm. The doosra uses the same toe spin but is distributed with the back of the hand facing the batsman and is rotated from leg to leg. “Doosra” is from Urdu or Hindi for “next” or “second”.

The answer to the tricky question about runs is that only one batsman can be “run out” at a time. The umpires must apply Law 29 to decide which batsman should go. However, in a match between England and the West Indies, a shot from West Indies’ Michael Holding hit one set of wickets before going on to break the next set. Both batsmen were off their ground but the umpires were too confused to dismiss either of them.

Stats and conditions are good, but there are also sources of more unusual cricket facts and stories on the web, as well as a whole industry of cricket books. If you want some real in-depth records, you can try the various publications by Bill Frindall, who has been the scorer and statistician for the BBC Test Match Special team for 40 years, and his knowledge is second to none.

If you want to test your knowledge of cricket facts, there are a number of cricket quiz websites that are good family fun and free to use. And for a real challenge, can you find out the details behind the headlines ‘Rabbit Burns Pavilion’, ‘Hot Air Balloons Stop Play’ or ‘Nude Dancing Cricketers Arrested’? The answers are via one of the sources in this article!
