Memory Improvement Tips From Contemporary Memory Gurus
The list of memory gurus is few and far between. Mentally gifted individuals are the cream of the crop; the best of the best if you can. The human mind is a multifaceted instrument that is difficult to understand, yet there are extraordinary individuals who navigate its complex system smoothly. The ultimate meeting for modern memory gurus is the World Memory Championship. Founded in 1991, it includes 10 disciplines where participants are required to memorize as many numbers, binary digits, lists of words, places and names, dates, images and playing cards as they can in various time constraints. The tour has provided a perfect stage for modern-day thinkers to display their God-given gifts.
The most notable finisher is Dominic O’Brien. He is a British memory expert who has won the championship a record eight times and was the first winner of the tournament. An author of various mnemonic books, he created the Dominic Mnemonic System and works as a trainer for Peak Performance Training. After watching Creighton Carvello memorize a shuffled deck in 2 minutes and 59 seconds on Record Breakers, he decided to invent his own mnemonic technique. O’Brien recited the order of 2,808 shuffled playing cards in a single glance, earning him his place in the coveted Guinness Book of World Records. In the entire process, he made only eight mistakes, four of which were corrected immediately after being told about the mix-up. He appeared on several television programs including The Human Body and now regularly lectures at symposia and seminars.
Ben Pridmore is another distinguished member of the elite club of gifted thinkers. A three-time World Memory Champion (2004, 2008 and 2009) and a former world record holder for the fastest time to remember a shuffled deck of cards at an astounding 24.68 seconds. A German athlete and memory advocate named Simon Reinhard quickly grabbed the crown from Pridmore after he effortlessly clocked a memory time of 21.9 seconds. Pridmore is an active participant in various mental calculations and memory sports. He joined the Computing World Cup in 2004, 2006 and 2010 and was the Mind Sports Olympiad World Champion in 2001.
A two-time Guinness World Record holder, Jonathan Hancock was a one-time winner of the World Memory Championship and is the founder of the Junior Memory Championship. He wrote nine books on learning and memory. Jonathan spent most of his teenage life broadcasting over the radio station at the local hospital. His early broadcasting experience came in handy when he worked as a radio presenter for BBC Radio Oxford for 15 years. He currently works as a primary school teacher and within the Junior Memory Championship; he has teamed up with The Learning Skills Foundation to promote memory strategies for primary schools.
Other talented thinkers included in the elite list of World Memory Championship winners are Andy Bell, Clemens Mayer, Gunther Karsten and Wang Feng. Bell was a three-time world champion (1998, 2002 and 2003) while Mayer was a back-to-back champion (2005 and 2006). Both competitors openly used the method of loci to win the championships. Karsten was a 2007 winner, while Feng (2010) is the latest winner of the tournament’s relatively short but fascinating history.
Modern day memory gurus are the torch bearers of the art of memory techniques. They are the link that connects the past with the present. The chosen few who carry on the vital but underappreciated tradition of the memory sport so that we can have glimpses of enlightenment.
