The 1923 FA Cup Final

The 1923 FA Cup Final was significant for several reasons. The final was the first ever match played at the original Wembley Stadium, London, between Bolton Wanderers and West Ham United on 24 April 1923.

The stadium was built at a cost of £750,000 and was completed a year ahead of schedule, in fact the stadium was completed just four days before the final. With a capacity of 125,000, the organizers were initially worried that they would not be able to fill the stadium, they needn’t have worried.

Given the large capacity crowd at the new stadium, the Football Association decided not to make the match a full-ticket event and fans could only pay in rolls on the day of the match. Both clubs in the final averaged 20,000 attendances for their home games and in the three previous FA Cup finals held at Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge stadium, the crowds were less than capacity.

No one could have predicted what would happen on the day of the final, as an estimated 200,000-300,000 spectators descended on the new Wembley Stadium to watch the match.

The sheer volume of people outside the stadium eventually brought down the barriers and the huge crowd filled the stadium to breaking point, the sheer pressure of the people eventually spilling onto the pitch, which delayed the start of the match by 45 minutes. Clearing the fans from the field at first seemed an impossible task, but it was achieved largely thanks to a policeman on a white horse who systematically forced the crowd back. The final later became known as the ‘white horse final’

With the crowd forced and many fans standing around the perimeter of the pitch, the game finally got underway and was won by Bolton, beating West Ham United 2-0. The trophy was presented by King George V, who attended the match and witnessed the chaotic scenes.

The reason for the large crowds has been attributed to the historic opening of the new stadium, extensive newspaper and radio publicity, the fact that a ticket was not required for the match, West Ham being a London team had created more interest in the final, and as he said a supporter at the time, it was nice weather so we just thought we’d go and watch the game.

The first Wembley Cup Final will never be forgotten, every cup final since that day has been a ticket match.
