Creating Cuisine in Sayulita on the Riviera Nayarit, Mexico

What is it about Sayulita on Mexico’s Riviera Nayarit that keeps drawing us in? Located just north of Puerto Vallarta, it’s a world away from the “typical” tourist destination.

Is it because it’s a sleepy little fishing village with a laid back, surfer vibe that caters to our inner child to just be free to explore the ocean, beach and Mexican culture of yesteryear?

Is it a village that defies the temptation to become overly commercial, which in turn would destroy the warmth and charm of a hidden gem?

Is the beach sandy with a long, gentle surf break in warm, clear water?

We believe it’s all of the above and the Sayulita Good Vibes is truly a state of mind that all visitors experience…and we are drawn back again and again.

Set up a base camp

This article focuses on the eating… plain and simple… as most everything you eat here is fresh, locally sourced and reasonably priced.

Sayulita is an epicurean’s delight with incredible dining options from “street food” to full gourmet restaurants.

We usually take the road less traveled and find vacation rentals that boast a well-equipped chef’s kitchen.

Once again Sayulita Life (sayulitalife.com) becomes the home page. They represent over 400 vacation rental options and we usually find the “perfect” spot.

We love to cook and on this trip we enticed two other like-minded couples to join us. Looking for a place for three couples to share brings the price point for more expensive properties into a much more reasonable price range.

A cornucopia of fresh ingredients

Sayulita and other surrounding villages have organized and planned many open-air farmers’ markets that emphasize organic options, offering local fruits and vegetables.

One of our favorite markets was a short drive south of Sayulita at the La Cruz Marina Fish Market in Banderas Bay, where you can buy freshly caught fish, shrimp, lobster, oysters and various other seafood. all at great prices.

Fish markets have been a staple in Banderas Bay for generations, in fact many of the area’s restaurants, personal chefs and caterers shop here for their seafood daily.

In addition, the Sunday market features handmade items from the locals as well as the indigenous tribes of the area… each vendor can only sell what they have personally made… now that’s local pride.

Dining at… Chef’s personal option

For a special treat, we hired three professional chefs on three different evenings to share their talents and treat us to their regional dishes from their respective heritages.

Reasoning the decision to hire a personal chef for three couples who like to cook for themselves wasn’t difficult considering the alternatives.

Imagine dining in the comfort of your vacation rental, and all you have to do is enjoy the cooking demonstration (if you’d like), enjoy a refreshing drink, and await the wonderful cuisine that will be prepared just for you. and yours. taste preferences.

There’s no shopping for ingredients, no prep, no cracking, and best of all… no cleanup. It all unfolds like magic… and for less than the cost of a similar meal at a restaurant outside.

You owe it to yourself to try it at least once for a date or special event, and besides, you’re all on vacation… so make a memory!

Below are three unique chefs with their own style and specialties…all awaiting your call.

Boss Laura

We were introduced to Laura as our housekeeper at Villa Sol Blau and were told that she is an excellent cook who has prepared meals for many guests.

What we discovered is that Laura uses family recipes combined with fresh local ingredients and treats her dining customers as “family” while enjoying the warmth and grace of her heritage…we enjoyed a traditional meal and Laura’s charming personality … “Mom “It was in the kitchen!

Laura prepared an authentic regional meal consisting of Chile Green Enchiladas and traditional slow-cooked black beans, followed by Chile Relleno with a poblano sauce and Mexican rice, all based on a family recipe. Her flan cake was of course homemade and was delicate and creamy.

Chief Sofia Silva Sanchez

We “found” Chef Sofia on the Sayulita Life site and she also has her own website (sayulitachef.com). After reading the great reviews as well as her extensive menu options, we made a dinner date.

Sofia is a lively, lively and very personable individual and as a chef her wide range of cooking skills extends from traditional Mexican cuisine to menus offering Italian, Indian, Moroccan, vegetarian and vegan options.

Her excellent dessert reputation is definitely understated!

The meal began with Cucumber Bowls filled with Shrimp Ceviche, followed by a

organic salad greens topped with chipotle dressing. The main course consisted of tender pieces of chicken baked in a poblano sauce with Mexican rice, and her dessert was homemade pie filled with strawberries and mint.

Chef Daniel Murillo

Chef Daniel is the consummate professional and does his cooking with flair… he literally lights up the room! You can say… Flambe!

Daniel owns the Mexotix restaurant in the neighboring town of San Pancho, which is a short drive north of Sayulita. He offers his catering and cooking services in Sayulita and we have enjoyed his outstanding Mexican-Fusion with an Asian Twist style on many occasions. (sayulitalife.com/mexotik)

Chef Daniel works with Sous Chef Juan to create amazing food. It started with seared sesame-crusted tuna served on toastini with cucumber and alfalfa noodles dressed in a balsamic reduction.

Followed by handmade empanadas from scratch filled with fried shrimp in Mexican citrus salsa and melted panela cheese.

With some flare and fire, Daniel has fried an Octopus in orange reduction with hibiscus and chips served with grilled vegetables and coconut rice… tender and delicious.

Dining IN… Create your own dining experience

The three couples organized a friendly competition and over the course of three nights it was game-on! But our first stop was a trip to the La Cruz Fish Market, followed by visiting a number of markets within the city and one more stop at the excellent fish market just over the bridge into town.

We started with the Team Challenge: Jumbo Blue Shrimp cooked three ways.

One team prepared Seared Mahi-Mahi with organic greens and avocado.

One team grilled two very large spiny lobsters with lots of melted butter on the side.

A team grilled two sushi-grade yellowtail tuna steaks about two pounds each.

We all showed off our cooking skills, sampled incredible wines from Chile and Mexico, and most of all enjoyed the experience.

summary

Culinary creation in a village with a cadre of personal chefs, fresh seafood, organic farmers’ markets and local vendors offering all the ingredients you need to make unforgettable gastronomic experiences… all located in one semi tropical… it’s just very special.

“Sayulita Good Vibes” is truly a state of mind that all visitors experience… and we are drawn back again and again!

Viva Mexico… Viva Sayulita!

After all, what a rush … get inspired …
