Kabbadi the Game – Its Origins and Popularity
People have been playing games and sports since time immemorial. Kabbadi is a game that is very popular in South Asia, although the game is played under different names in different countries. It has also gained international recognition through several prestigious tournaments held around the world. Members of the International Federation of Kabaddiists are 31 countries.
The earliest form of Kabbadi originated in ancient India and there are several references to the game in the Mahabharata. The ancient Indian Vedic schools practiced the game with great reverence. Poet Tukaram said in his writings that Kabaddi was Lord Krishna’s favorite sport. It has been one of the most popular sports in South India for centuries.
Kabaddi is a contact sport involving two opposing teams. The term kabaddi is also used to refer to various forms such as sanjeevani, gomini, amar and punjabi which are played according to international rules. Interestingly, this game has several names in India – for example, Kabbadi or Sadugudu in Tamil Nadu, Chedugudu in Andhra Pradesh, Hututu in Maharashtra. Elsewhere in the Asian region, it is called Khadudu in Bangladesh and Baibalaa in the Maldives. There are some variations in the rules between the countries played, although the game itself is not very different and is considered a national sport – for example for Bangladesh and Nepal. During the British occupation of India, it was played as a fun sport by British soldiers, and its entry into Great Britain was only inevitable. The game is governed by the governing federations in these countries.
The game’s origins have been somewhat of a mystery, with several claimants to fame. It probably originated in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, when the name “kabaddi” is understood as a takeoff from the term “kai pidhi”, which means “holding hands”. It may have started as a form of self-defense between village groups and hunting parties and slowly evolved into a fun game. By the early 1900s, the rules of the game had become standardized and modern. Since then, it has become a synthesis of a sport played under various names and popular with both men and women.
The international exposure of kabaddi took place in 1936 at the Olympic Games in Berlin, where it was demonstrated by India. Its participation in the Indian National Games took place in Kolkata in 1938. Relaunched as the Amateur Kabaddi Federation of India (AKFI) in 1972 from the early 1950s version of the All India Kabaddi Federation (AIKF), the sport received a major boost when the First the national tournament was held in Chennai.
In the mid-1970s, kabbadi was introduced to Japan, Nepal and Malaysia. The first Asian Kabaddi Championship was played in 1980 and Kabaddi was included in the 1990 Asian Games in Beijing for the first time. The most popular Kabaddi championships are Asian Games, Kabaddi Asia Cup, British Kabaddi Cup and Kabaddi World Cup. The Pro Kabbadi League, which started in 2014 in India, is a national tournament featuring eight franchise teams from eight different cities competing for the trophy, much like the Indian Premier League cricket tournament.
International variants of the game also have similar rules, where two teams of seven members each, with three additional members, face off on the field. The game lasts 45 minutes with two halves of 20 minutes each and a 5-minute break in the middle when the teams change sides. The variations in the different forms consist mainly of the points scored by the teams, some of the rules that govern the players, and in some cases, the length of time.
Kabbadi is one of the few games that is played both indoors and outdoors. Actually beach kabaddi is a very popular sport.
