ALMOST EVERY “fighting” man of any significance CAME FROM a combat sport. Boxing, wrestling, judo. WEF and O’Neill (SIXTH DAN-Kodokan-Judo-Personal Student of Uchijima Sensei, NEWAZA LEGEND) are prime examples of this.

But HERE’S THE BEST modern example:

Mention his name in wrestling circles here in Jersey. HE IS A LEGEND! Head to the Yonezuki Dojo (one of the BEST in the WORLD) and watch Damian Randori take on TOP level competition. Go to ZENSHIN Dojo and “hang in” with him for one of his therapeutic sessions (the man DOESN’T KNOW the meaning of the word EXIT!). AND THEN……..ask him to teach “self-defense”. See what he teaches.

I WILL SAY it AGAIN. What a 20- or 25-year-old young person and what a middle-aged businessman seeks to gain from his training are TWO DIFFERENT THINGS.

As for the “effectiveness” of ANY technique, well, FEAR is FEAR. I know a guy whose head was cut open by a blow with a lead pipe. Know what? HE STILL beat the sh## out of TWO holes. And WHAT?

You will HIT like hell until either YOU are done or HE is.

And why is it so hard to “get” that “melee” is so much MORE than “axe hands” and “tiger claws”. It’s ANYTHING THAT WORKS. Cracking someone’s egg with a blackjack is a melee. A “knee strike” with a bat or ax handle is close combat. Dealing with a street punk wearing “knooks” or “sap” gloves is hand-to-hand combat. Using a shiva, dagger, or the damn ballpoint pen is melee. A hot cup of coffee right in the mug is a HOT FIGHT.

I “know” guys who have trained in martial arts for DECADES. YEARS of competitive experience and TONS of knowledge. KNOW WHAT? Screw them and the LAST thing they will think of is ANY “unarmed” mano ma mano response.

As for “building” attributes? OF COURSE! Athletics in general builds many wonderful and useful attributes. BUT …. I know of many cases where people with no athletic experience at all have overcome HUGE odds. I’ve also witnessed “champions” who were in the ring like hell and FOLDED on the mat like the proverbial “cheap suit” when the rubber really met the road. And WHAT?

But here is the REAL problem at the heart of this ongoing debate.

Someone who has trained in “Karate” for years has invested time, money and possibly blood sweat and tears into his pursuit. He WANTS to believe that what he has invested so much into is WORKING. Same for kung fu. The same for Aikido. Same for BJJ. The same for boxing. The same for wrestling. The same for judo. Same for Savate. Ditto for FMA. FOR ANY COUPLINGS ONLY.

But it ONLY makes sense within the PARAMETERS of this PARTICULAR effort. A competitive judoka expects to compete within the well-defined “rules” of THIS competition. They do NOT expect to get neck-and-neck and get stabbed in the gut by another contestant. The boxer enters the ring and waits for the fight according to the agreed rules of the boxing commission. He does NOT expect his opponent to shoot him from outside the ring.

Let’s say you are a top collegiate wrestler. Through circumstances beyond your control (real life does), you’ll have to face some desperate, well-armed enemies. You are given a “choice”. Try using your grappling skills, which you are VERY GOOD at, or pick up a 12 gauge shotgun.

Now let’s say that you are at a relative’s wedding. The booze is flowing pretty well and Uncle Vinny is getting a little out of control. Same choice as above. Use your fighting skills to hold off old Uncle Vinny, or grab a gun?

I DON’T CARE about “style” or “system” or any of that SHIT. WHY? Because I ONLY WONDER what will save MY ASS in the real world if it’s for all the balls. I’ve spent YEARS in judo, I’ve been really attacked, and I grab bricks and pound rocks to a pulp. DAMN! I didn’t get a chance to use judo! OR… I get grabbed from behind and manage to throw the rocks to the ground with O-Goshi, THEN I finish him off with a brick. And WHAT?

When the “tiger claw” works great! When “hadaka jime” works great! When kicking balls works GREAT! When uninstalling it works GREAT! When driving the bastards on my car, it works great!

Anyone out there “get” this! IT’S NOT ABOUT WHAT IS OR NOT “BETTER” OR MORE “EFFECTIVE”. ANYTHING THAT SAVES YOUR BUTT IS GOOD!

It is NOT about who is “right”, but only about who is “left”!
