What Manner of Ministers?
The administration has 8 months left in the season. One would expect incumbent President Goodluck to reinvent the team as it was touted in the media, bringing in fresh, trusted and lively hands to enable him end his 8 months as manager on a historic note.
Whenever I watch or read news about the state of the Nigerian nation, I just get paranoid, other times I just smile and shake my head. My reaction is not out of pity or bad news, but the extent to which these unknown conspirators insult our intelligence. I have always been of the opinion before the Yardua health political saga, that a small group of dumb people determine how this country is run. The Yardua case just went to prove how annoyingly unintelligent these so-called kaba are. These shameless individuals will do anything to keep themselves in power (including being stupid).
I am sure most Nigerians will be disappointed with the incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan, we all gave him the benefit of the doubt and hoped he would be the one to bring much needed fresh air to the leadership of this country ( at least for a day or two). I don’t know about you, but I; “I am unhappy about the man.” He just went on to confirm that he is liverless. How quickly he showed us that he lacked the political will to bring about the necessary changes in this government.
Back to the list of ministers, contrary to my expectations, the incumbent Vice President continued to do the same two main things that every God-forsaken administration always does;
1. Recycling old hands who never performed with their first third, second… in some cases up to their tenth chance (someone just mumbled Jerry Gana) or nominating their family members
2. Never attach portfolios to ministerial nominees until they have been vetted and approved by our dishonest legislators.
The idea of recycling unsuccessful old hands or appointing their family members is nothing but political. Competence is not an issue when it comes to the appointment of ministers in Nigeria. How then do we expect to take our country to the Eldorado we desire, when we consciously continue to put petty sentiments and politics ahead of the nation’s development and well-being. What is the justification for the appointments of Josphine Anenih, Murtala Yardua and Josephine Tapgun as ministers, if not only politics?
Our leaders must begin to embrace the political will to ensure we move forward for good. Remove yourself from this selfish attitude. Nigeria is bigger than any individual or family, and I refused to believe that the Anenihs and Yarduas are the most competent candidates from their respective states.
Having portfolios attached to a ministerial appointment will allow the public to access each one based on the proposed office. It will enable the public to determine the competence of each individual and not reserve that responsibility solely to our dishonest legislators.
Effective performance management should be encouraged in government. Newly appointed ministers are never given targets to effectively mark each of them over a period. It is provocative how a minister in all branches, failed in a previous ministry is reappointed and placed in a new ministry. Using football as an analogy, the team comes first, as does the country. Only the best should be hired if we want to win, not party members or family friends.
Barcelona is one, if not the best football team in the world. So imagine a Messi playing in defense or a Puyol playing as a striker, I wonder if they would be where they are today. Our leaders must start putting square pegs into square holes in the appointment of ministers in Nigeria if we are to become one of the top 20 countries in the world (not in 2020 anyway). However, let’s watch and pray as always. And I hope the current administration proves us wrong (I sincerely hope they do).
