2010’s Ten Biggest, Most Memorable Events
As we cast our reflective gaze into the sunset this year, we can marvel at what has transpired. All of our years are filled with so much, and this year MMX has seen no less drama and tragedy than we’re used to seeing. Perhaps in terms of magnitude, the following ten events can be considered (in reverse ‘counting’ order) the biggest, most memorable (so far):
NUMBER TEN – “The End of H1N1 Flu”
The World Health Organization (WHO) calls the end of the H1N1 flu pandemic on August 10. Illness due to influenza is now said to have returned to “typical seasonal patterns”.
NUMBER NINE – “The Synthesized Genome and ‘Alien’ Life Forms”
A “functional” synthetic genome was officially created by scientists on May 20, by synthesizing the bacterium, but Venter’s group did not call it a breakthrough. Also, an arsenic-based life form (bacteria) is discovered on December 2nd by NASA.
NUMBER EIGHT – “Two of the best in world sport”
The 2010 FIFA World Cup is played in South Africa between 11 June and 11 July and is won by Spain. Also, the 2010 (Twenty-first) Winter Olympics are held in Vancouver and Whistler during February 12-28. The home team, Canada, won the most gold medals.
NUMBER SEVEN – “The Consequences of the World Financial Crisis”
The depth of the global financial crisis continues to hit several countries hard with Greece (May 2) and Ireland (November 29) being saved by monetary funds in the amount of 110 and 85 billion euros respectively.
NUMBER SIX – “Mine Disasters”
The trapped Chilean miners, all thirty-three of them, return to the surface on October 13 after 69 days of captivity deep underground. Not so lucky are the twenty-nine New Zealand miners at the Pike River Coal Mine, Atarau, who were trapped on 19 November by an initial explosion but almost certainly killed by a second explosion on 24 November.
NUMBER FIVE – “Antimatter Was Created”
Antimatter is trapped for one-sixth of a second, temporarily holding thirty-eight antihydrogen atoms, at CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research) on November 17. This is the first time in history that humans have achieved this.
NUMBER FOUR – “Wikileaks”
The ‘Wikileaks’ scandal exposed nearly 100,000 classified and secret reports on July 25, and the scandal surrounds issues from embarrassed governments to individuals trying to damage reputations. The scandal unfolds in the remainder of 2010.
NUMBER THREE – “Eyjafjallajökull volcanic ash disrupts air traffic”
The Icelandic volcano first erupted on March 20, but on April 14 it entered an explosive phase and the resulting ash was thrown 30,000 feet into the air, threatening European airspace. It disrupted the travel and return home plans of millions of people intermittently between April 15 and May 17 and featured several periods of total closure of European airspace. It further proves the theory that God always has the final say on our plans.
NUMBER TWO – “The Deepwater Horizon Disaster”
The Deepwater Horizon oil platform in the Gulf of Mexico was crippled by an explosion on April 20, killing 11 workers. It ends up being one of the biggest environmental disasters ever. The safety and ethics of offshore drilling are being questioned internationally.
NUMBER ONE – “Haiti Earthquake”
The 7.0-magnitude earthquake that rocked and shook Port-au-Prince, Haiti, on January 12 devastates a nation ill-equipped to handle such devastation. The world responds with sympathy and help, and the “Help Haiti” appeal, song and concerts sought to pour hope into a hopeless situation. Over 230,000 people died as a result.
