Rugby World Cup 2011: An Accommodation Guide for Visiting Fans
As a rugby fan, you are probably looking forward to one of the biggest times of your life as you prepare for the 2011 Rugby World Cup. If you’re lucky enough to be one of the thousands of supporters who will descend on New Zealand for the event – or if you’re still deciding on the trip south – then this accommodation guide is for you. It examines the wide variety of accommodation options in New Zealand and looks at the advantages and disadvantages of each.
Variety of choices
The small country has a huge range of accommodation options – from high-end luxury hotels and exclusive five-star lodges in pristine locations to well-located campsites – and everything in between. This article will review the choices available depending on your budget, the type of experience you want, and the places you plan to visit.
Hotels and motels
In the main centers (Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington and Dunedin) there is a wide range of hotels to choose from, although at this stage (just over three months from opening) availability can be difficult to find – especially around match weekends . If you only plan to spend a few nights in each city, then a hotel or motel may be a good option for you. The downside would be that it can be an expensive choice, and while you may be in the city centre, you may still be quite a distance from the stadiums (especially in Auckland).
Houses/private rooms for rent
New Zealanders are famous around the world for their hospitality and this is becoming a popular option as the Rugby World Cup approaches. There are several purpose-built websites created over the last 12-18 months that aim to bring residents and visitors together. Those non-rugby Kiwis (yes, there are quite a few) are planning to leave the country during the tournament, which starts on September 9 and ends with the final at Eden Park on October 23. Others have spare rooms available, or are renting out their second home or a holiday home. The advantages are location (as there are houses and rooms available within walking distance of major stadiums) and the convenience of having a furnished house or room at your disposal. Many Kiwis also offer extras such as airport pickup, meals and social outings. What you’ll pay can vary widely, but often the daily rate is significantly lower than hotels or motels, especially for couples or groups. If you plan to go to several different cities, this would require some planning, as some homeowners insist on a minimum stay.
The campsite
New Zealand has a well-established network of campsites in every possible location across the country. While they aren’t usually in the center of cities or near stadiums, New Zealand’s size means you’ll never be more than a pleasant drive away. In terms of transport, there are limited intercity train options, but perfectly adequate bus services to most parts of the country. Perhaps your best option however would be to hire a car or camper van. Hiring a car in New Zealand is cheap and hassle-free; there is plenty of competition that keeps prices down and a well-maintained road network makes driving safe and sound.
