What Is Advertising Nowadays?

Imagine the peacocks and flowers of the world. Colors, sounds and performances communicate to the rest of the species that you are a suitable mate. Plant seeds and pollen are spread by other animals only if they can attract attention. People instinctively understand and respond to advertising. It has been encoded in our genes since the ages of evolution.

Product advertising is an obvious extension of this evolutionary phenomenon. We take advantage of techniques that grab people’s attention in order to get them to consider a purchase or an idea. The way we imagine advertising in its many forms did not take off until the advent of mass production with the Industrial Revolution.

Before that time, products were marketed within small communities and there was no need to appeal to a large audience. Indeed, the illiteracy rate was so high that advertising would be useless. However, once markets expanded beyond closely related groups, word of mouth would no longer be enough to sell your wares.

Mass production allowed many revolutions to occur that drove advertising practices. First, printing became much cheaper as it was automated. This meant that companies could mass produce advertisements for the first time. In addition, societies began to accept the need for education. Therefore, explosions in reading ability and the availability of print caused advertising to grow during the industrial revolution.

Advertising soon became an industry in its own right when newspapers and magazines began to allow paid advertisements to be placed in their publications. This allowed specialists to make a living by designing and implementing advertising as opposed to producing the products themselves.

Every new medium of communication that has developed has opened doors for advertising. Printing gained mass appeal shortly after the Industrial Revolution began. The next big leap was radio, a medium that exploded in popularity beginning in the 1920s. The rise of radio advertising paralleled this development.

Television followed the same path to commercialization as radio beginning in the 1950s. The next, and perhaps greatest, advance for advertising was the popularization of the Internet beginning in the 1990s. Each medium gradually expanded its potential audience to the point where today a advertising can reasonably reach anyone on the globe.

In fact, it could be argued that advertising made the various media possible. Interestingly, the need for advertising has increased over time. In print media, selling ad-free subscriptions can support a publication. Of course, additional advertising revenue can significantly expand profitability. Radio relied significantly more on advertisers as broadcast signals could not be limited to subscribers at the time. Therefore, the sale of advertisements made radio media profitable.

Until cable became popular, television was the same as radio. Signals were broadcast indiscriminately to antennas in homes, so advertising had to be sold to support the industry. With cable and other subscription-based services gaining ground in the 1980s, television was able to break away somewhat from the need to sell advertising for support.

The Internet presented a particularly tricky medium to commercialize. A subscription based website can easily be underestimated by similar free websites. This availability of free, widely available material made advertising essential to supporting online ventures unless a tangible product was being sold. At that time, many people thought that the Internet was not profitable.

Nowadays, advertising is tightly integrated into every medium available to us. Ads appear on radio, television, and Internet videos. Advertisements are placed freely on websites, on billboards, on buildings and on buses to catch your eye. Reaching an audience to convince them has never been as easy and complicated at the same time as it is today.

The sheer volume of information bombarding everyone means your ad needs to stand out to get noticed. Despite this challenge, there is no better way to support a product than through successful advertising.
