Fight Racism Unitedly, No Knee-Jerk Kockish Controversy Please!

It is very unfortunate that the revival of ICC Men’s T20 World Cup-2021 has to be marred by a largely unnecessary controversy. Has any team in international tournaments ever objected to singing their national anthem or any team to their rivals singing their national anthems? Definitely not, it is a common practice in almost all such tournaments in various fields of sports. Therefore, the ‘personal choice’ syndrome never comes up here. So why should this syndrome appear in ‘taking the knee’ for a very noble cause? In our school days, our teachers ordered us to kneel on countless occasions, obviously to correct our mistakes, hence we are better human beings today. Have we considered exercising our democratic choice in those cases? The Black Lives Matter movement (BLM), launched in 2013 ‘as a decentralized political and social movement protesting incidents of police brutality and all racially motivated violence against black people’ around the world is fully justified. The movement had its ups and downs, but following the brutal police killing of black protester George Floyd in the US in 2020, it has gained international prominence, and Michael Holding, the former West Indies cricketer, made strenuous efforts to bring it that in place. the arena of cricket – unfortunately this gentleman’s game had seen the ugly expressions of racism in quite a few cases in international cricket, which included not only blacks, but also the so-called ‘colored’ players.

We have seen in most matches played so far in this World Cup teams kneeling before kick-off to express their solidarity against the evil of racism. The ICC had not issued any official directive on the gesture, but made it voluntary for teams. Cricket South Africa (CSA), the country that was boycotted by the international community for years for their infamous Apartheid policy, has been exemplary in making the gesture mandatory for their team before kick-off. So what’s wrong with following that noble gesture, and how does the question of personal choice arise in such important international matters? Team India had also taken the gesture as instructed by their cricket board, and England also performed the gesture in their match against the West Indies like most other teams.

The noble gesture was also done during South Africa’s opening match against Australia; not including all players of course. But suddenly and crucially as the match was against the West Indies, South African opener and wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock took issue, calling his refusal to bend the knee personal. Not only did he refuse to make the gesture, but he also withdrew from the match in the last minutes, which was confirmed by AQSH. This is extremely worrying because de Kock has also been a key cricketer in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for years, playing for Mumbai Indians (the franchise may release him soon due to influence) which included many black and ‘ colored players; In fact, India is a country of only black people. So why did de Kock never object to playing with them consistently, as an integral member of the team? If his ‘personal choice’ is not to support the BLM movement, then it smacks of racism, or else de Kock is perhaps a staunch supporter of the theory of ‘white supremacy’ so bullishly propounded by former US President- Well, Donald Trump. We condemn his action in the World Cup, which could ultimately adversely affect his entire cricket career, and South Africa would obviously never want to lose such a key player. The CSA is yet to deliver the final verdict on Quinton de Kock’s future, although some media reports suggest the player has been withdrawn from the entire tournament, while others fear this could be the last time we see de Kock on the pitch. .

We hope for an amicable solution for all parties concerned who uphold the noble cause, respecting the ideals and movement of Nelson Mandela and appropriate punishment for anyone who is guilty as a racist. The ICC should, in fact, take this opportunity to make the ‘taking the knee’ gesture mandatory for all participating teams. The Council rightly prohibits any kind of political or religious gesture, but in the defense of this noble cause there can be no hesitation or the principles of democratic elections.

In the controversial match against the West Indies, South Africa won easily, without de Kock. In other matches, Afghanistan in Group 2 recorded a big win over Group B qualifiers Scotland, even bigger than Pakistan’s against India. Pakistan continue their thrilling winning streak by beating New Zealand, although they had to fight back to chase down a lowly target of 135 runs. England in Group 1 also kept their ominous bulldozing act going by beating Bangladesh. Both Pakistan and England seem to be enjoying their luck so far in terms of bringing slow pitches and the dew factor later on for the bowling side. After creating history by advancing to the Super-12 stage for the first time by beating a well-placed Ireland, Namibia won their World Cup opener against Scotland in relative comfort in Group-2.
