Entertaining Tips – The Perfect Drink For Outdoor Occasions
Mint Juleps are considered the quintessential cooling drink associated with the southern United States. No doubt Mint Juleps were at the grand plantations like Tara in the movie, Gone with the wind and in our imaginations Juleps are most often enjoyed in the shade of a beautiful, broad-leaved Magnolia tree reminiscent of milder, grander times. For alfresco summer fun, Juleps served in ice-chilled cups still definitely steal the show. But no one is really sure of the origins of this highly romanticized drink associated with lost worlds of grandeur and tradition.
A drink with a story
Mint Juleps are still a famous drink associated with the Kentucky Derby, where 120,000 juleps are served at Churchill Downs over the two days following the races. Churchill Downs is also famous for unveiling the world’s largest mint julep glass, 6 feet tall and shaped like the official Derby glass in 2008. It holds 206 gallons of mint juleps dispensed through an elaborate pumping system.
The Mint Julep first appeared in print in a book published in London in 1803, where the drink was described as “a dram of spirituous liquor in which mint is steeped, used by Virginians of the morning.”
What’s in a Julep?
This drink is still made in the time-honored tradition of bourbon, sugar and water with a mint garnish (usually spearmint). The mint garnish is intended to entice and enhance the taste, starting with the aroma before the drink itself. The preparation of the drink varies from bartender to bartender, and no one really knows where this unusual drink originated, but here is a traditional Southern recipe.
Ingredients:
- About 20 mint leaves
- 2 teaspoons of sugar
- 2 to 3 oz. bourbon
- Lots of crushed ice
Put mint leaves and sugar in a tin mug. Mix the leaves and sugar until the sugar dissolves. Add the bourbon and stir. Fill a pewter mug with crushed ice and stir until an icy frost forms on the outside of the mug. Garnish with additional mint leaves or a whole sprig and serve immediately. This recipe makes one mint julep cocktail.
How to Serve a Mint Julep
Pewter goblets (or silver, if you don’t mind the polish) are the drinking vessels of choice when indulging in this revered but still unusual drink. Glass has also been used, but tin retains the cold and acts almost like a thermos.
If you’ve never heard of the rules for holding a cup, keep this in mind: you should only hold the tin Julep Cup by the bottom and top rims! This is to form frost on the larger outer surface (probably to keep you cooler in warm weather). It is also believed that if you hold the cup on its sides, the heat from your hand will seep in and the drink will be too warm. After all, the point of drinking a Mint Julep is to keep you cool and calm, if not a little tipsy, when the weather is just plain hot outside.
A colonial favourite
Fine pewter Richmond Julep cups are still available today and are patterned after the originals made and used in colonial times. Crafted by skilled pewter smiths in Richmond, Virginia, this cup, with its soft, lustrous luster, was a shining drinking vessel that brought classic charm to home entertaining during the colonial era. The Richmond Julep Cup was designed with a delicate beaded rim and a raised base (perhaps to remind people to limit holding the cup on its rim and base).
Pewter drinking cups were also inspired by beakers once owned by George Washington, and today there is a Jefferson cup that is a replica of one originally used at Monticello and made under Jefferson’s direction.
The versatility of tin
Perfect for both formal and informal occasions, Pewter Mint Julep glasses lend a casual feel to outdoor entertaining and a sophisticated look to more formal events. And for those who “think outside the box”, Mint Julep pewter cups make wonderful wedding or party favors or can be filled with fresh cut flowers on any table setting for guests to enjoy. Group them together to create stunning highlights.
The versatility of pewter is the main reason why it is one of the most popular compositions for Mint Julep cups. It’s the warm glow and patina that makes the difference, the ability to hold the cold and of course pewter never needs to be polished like silver.
Mint Juleps and Summer Hospitality
The next time you’re planning a party, barbecue, or inviting guests to sit with you on the deck or poolside, think about serving Mint Juleps—perhaps the perfect drink for summer entertaining. Served in antebellum mansions of a more elegant era, the wonderful chilled goodness of this charming Southern drink will leave your guests with a warm welcome, cool off from the summer heat and definitely in a good mood. And if you have a Magnolia tree for your guests to stand under or lean against, that’s even better!
